The "I Will Remember You" and Columbine Controversy
at the end of april, the jefferson county sheriff's office released footage of the columbine high school shooting to comply with a court order. sarah's "i will remember you" is playing in the background. both arista and sarah objected (and rightfully so) to the unauthorized use of her music and issued the following statements:
The following is Arista Records statement regarding the usage of
Sarah McLachlan's music in the Columbine High School shooting home
video which was released yesterday.
The Columbine High School shootings that occurred over one year ago
were a catastrophic tragedy. Our compassion goes out to the family
and friends of the victims of this unfortunate event. Neither Sarah
McLachlan nor Arista Records were ever approached for the usage of
her music or image within the video being released. In fact, we
are demanding that her song "I Will Remember You" be removed from
this exploitative video tape.

Vice President
Publicity
Arista Records
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 27, 2000
SARAH MCLACHLAN STATEMENT RE: COLUMBINE VIDEO
A statement from Sarah:
"When I heard that someone was selling the tapes of the shootings for
public consumption, I was horrified. The thought of adding music
(any music) to these images for whatever reason is sick, and the idea
of profiting from selling someone else's tragedy is pitiful and
cruel. The kids and families of Columbine have been through more
than most of us could bear. They deserve our deepest compassion and
hope that they might someday find some peace and joy again in their
lives. This is my wish."
Sarah McLachlan
The Columbine High School shootings that occurred over one year ago
were a catastrophic tragedy. Our compassion goes out to the family
and friends of the victims of this unfortunate event. However, Sarah
McLachlan and Nettwerk Records were never approached about the use of
her music or image in the video prior to (or after) it's release by
the Jefferson County attorney's office. In fact, we have asked that
her song "I Will Remember You" be removed from this exploitative
video tape. The McLachlan song used in the video is from the live
album Mirrorball, released last year.
the song was removed from subsequent copies of the video tape.

Newzbits-O-Rama
ok here we go...due to my neglect this is gonna be one big ass sarah update <g> so hold on to yer hats folks!
sarah receives order of canada: on april 26th sarah received her "officer of the order" award from canada's governor general. as you can see from the photo on the left, sarah looks happy sporting her new neckware ;)
lilith co-founder to start tv series? apparently lilith fair co-founder marty diamond is in talks to develop a television series tentatively titled "the living room." the show would focus on musicians collaborating together (sarah has been mentioned as one of them) with beth orton as a possible host. see the full sotry at mtv.com.
sarah performs, loses at oscars: on march 26th, sarah performed the song "when she loved me" from toy story 2 live at the oscar ceremonies. unfortunately phil collins picked up the statue for best original song (aimee mann or "blame canada" deserved it more than phil *sigh*). nonetheless sarah looked very lovely as shown from these photos from jam and the oscar page. you can also hear sarah's performance and an interview at nothingonline. well at least i won the oscar pool at work! <g>
sarah receives lifetime achievement award at junos: on march 12th sarah presented and received an award at the juno awards...which is the canadian equivalent of the grammys. sarah was presented the international achievement award by fellow canadian alanis morrissette (isn't it ironic? ;)). sarah said of the award, "as a canadian you always feel...(that) we don't necessarily deserve
these things. it's just really nice for me to be recognized within my own
country for something i feel incredibly proud of. so this probably means
more to me than any other award i've ever gotten." you can see a photo of sarah and her award at the jam website.
"building a mystery" appears on compilation albums: sarah's "building a mystery" has shown up on a couple of compilation cds. the first is one entitled journeys and the second is entitled loaded with hits, a double cd set ala the totally hits and now compilation series.
<random articles and such: here's a few articles and such of interest. the jam website has an article entitled the hardest working gal in showbiz? from a few months back. there's an interview with sarah's chef jamie laurita over at canoe.ca. and lastly, there was a picture of sarah in the may issue of playboy. i don't have the link anymore but it was a picture of sarah in a um....rather revealing dress. rather nice i may say ;)
a good chuckle... finally, check out this press release from nettwerk:
Sarah McLachlan to collaborate with Trent Reznor on next album!
Sarah states: "I'm ready to scream on the next one!"
Armand S.
Nettwerk Communications
Vancouver, BC
Saturday, April 1st, 2000
Sarah McLachlan, in a move that has even her Nettwerk family scratching their
heads, has opted to collaborate with industrial goth-god Trent Reznor of Nine
Inch Nails, and bring a heavier and darker edge to her next album.
Asked about the sudden decision to change her style, Sarah stated: "I'm
getting a bit tired of being so relaxed behind the piano, or simply strumming
the guitar, and gently caressing my fans with my vocal style...I think it's
about time to let the fury out!"
Trent Reznor couldn't be reached for comment, but his publicist has stated on
his behalf: "Trent is really excited about working with Sarah on her next
album, and hopes they can possibly scream a duet together."
The surprising nature of Sarah's decision has caused a ripple effect in the
music industry, where other female artists such as the Indigo Girls, hearing
the news of Sarah's plans are themselves planning on recording a duet with
Rage Against The Machine. Sheryl Crow has also hinted she is in talks with
Pantera on some form of collaboration.
Terry McBride, Sarah's manager, stated: "Well, that's Sarah, you know? She's
pretty set in her ways, and besides, it's a new millennium, right? Anything
goes these days...."
On a final note: APRIL FOOL'S!!!!!!!

Sarah Wins Third Grammy!
on february 23rd, lost among the santana deluge, sarah picked up her third grammy (she won twice in 1998). she won in the best female pop performance category for "i will remember you" (live) beating out christina aquilera, madonna, alanis morrisette and britney spears. of course we did not see sarah receive her grammy as it was part of the untelevised portion of the broadcast. but we have this nice picture of it for you :) question: why only 10 grammys in 3 hours? it's an *awards* show. like i need to see ricky martin in a ring of fire :P anyway ;) in the other two categories in which she was nominated sarah lost best pop album to sting and best female rock performance to sheryl crow's "sweet child o' mine." sarah did present the best new artist award to miss aquilera along with sheryl and melissa etheridge. even though i'm not a big fan, it was nice to see that christina seemed genuinely surprised and grateful. though knowing the best new artist curse, she might not be later ;) you can see some other nice pictures of sarah at the grammys over at yahoo! and a complete list of winners at grammy.com. congrats to sarah...yay! :)

Sarah Nominated For Gibson Guitar Award
for the second year in a row, sarah has been nominated for an orville h. gibson guitar award. she's nominated in the best acoustic guitar (female) category along with sheryl crow and ani difranco (who should win even though her best work is *way* behind her). take these awards with a grain of salt kids, miss alanis "i know three chords" morissette is nominated for best female rock guitarist (huh???). anyway...the winners will be announced feb 22 in LA. for more info and a list of all the nominees, check out the gibson website.

Magazine Alert!
look for sarah blurbs in the following magazines: in this week's entertainment weekly (with ben affleck on the cover) there is a picture of sarah on page 76 eating jello (aww...cute). it accompanies an article about a show on feb 20th on the food network (i love the food network!) called "rock n' roll chefs." i can assume either sarah or chef jamie will be on it? in the feb/march issue of george magazine, lilith fair is number 47 on their list of 50 greatest moments in rock. a picture of sarah is included, don't know what the article says. will have to read it at work ;) and finally thanks to lara for the following info: an article entitled "sarah mclachlan cooks it up" about her cookbook will be in the march issue of in style. the magzine goes on sale feb 21st. thanks lara! :)
