I've been extremely pissed off lately. I can't nail down any specific reason, and that only irritates me more. I've been snappish with my girlfriend, and I shouldn't have to apologize because I shouldn't be that way to begin with.

I play an online text based adventure type game (sorta, I visit more than play) that just seems to get more under my skin than it really should. I've left before, but I came back after a while. I left again recently only to return in a more social manner. I think the time draws nigh when I will have to leave it altogether. There are some people who will probably "miss" me (for lack of a better word), but I think in the long run everyone will be better off for it.

I've been gone so long I'm not even going to bother catching you up with all the details. I didn't quit. I got fired. I didn't go look for another job. I started my own business. I'm doing ok.

I'm very certain I'm quitting my job on the 27th. 3 days remain for the fates to change my mind, and the foreshadowing is mighty dim.

I was paid a marvelous compliment today. It's always good to hear compliments, especially when they're made in the passing of normal conversation.

I went to visit a client of mine. They aren't a regular client really, but I was out there once before, and they expressed interest enough to have me come out again to help oversee the addition of new lines. We refer all cabling and telephone contract type items to a friend of ours whose company does these things. I was unable to make our appointment at this client, so my friend had to go alone. They told him that they were very impressed with me. They said that before I had gotten there, another guy had worked on the systems for 3 days straight without success, billed them $1700 bucks and still didn't have the job done.

The first time I walked out there, all they had were 5 pc's or so and some device called a "WebRamp". It's a proxy server box for dialup settings, and it costs $300. They already owned Windows 98 SE, and all of their systems were peer-to-peer networked, so I set them up on ICS. I told them they should get their money back for the WebRamp, and then I put out a few smaller brush fire type problems for them. That really makes me feel good when I walk into someone else's mess and clean house like that.

I feel a little more confident today than I did yesterday.

Are you familiar with the term "apthous ulcer"? Most people have no idea what it truly is, but they read "ulcer" leading them to believe that it's a festering sore of some sort (which is basically correct). Most people know apthous ulcers by their more common name of "kanker sore". However you designate them they're still painful and irritating.

Apthous ulcers hold a special place in my heart really. I get them when I'm stressed, and I get them in proportionate degree to my stress. When I was in the military I had anywhere from 4-6 of them in my mouth at any given moment, and they ranged in size from a dime to a quarter. When I left the military and came up here, I really liked my life and my job. I woke up every morning loving the place I came to work. I had no apthous ulcers whatsoever for about 6 months. Then some things happened that stressed me a bit, and I got a small one. It went away so it was no big deal. That's been the modus operandi for the last 2 years.

A couple of months ago things all went to shit. The stress level at work increased by a factor of about 10. Needless to say, the apthous ulcers have increased as well. I'm not getting them on the same level that I did while I was in the military, but I've had an apthous ulcer in my mouth for the last 2 months at all times. 6 of them have started and healed. Each time one heals another immediately takes its place.

It is definitely time to find a new job. My oral hygiene and my sanity require it.

I've made a semi-definitive decision to leave my job soon. I am currently anticipating this leave to be on April 27th. That's the last Friday of this month, and consequently it's the last payday of the month as well.

This is a very rough decision for me, but I wake up each morning thinking to myself, "Fuck...I have to go to work. I hate my job." I just want out of it. I've been looking for other jobs elsewhere, but I haven't found anything. I think it's mostly due to the fact that I have a job currently and it gives me a small sense of security. Without that little safety net I think I will be motivated more to get a job.

This decision also brings to an end the reign of enji.org as a free server. It will have to move to my house or to some other area. I've looked into co-location costs, and they're astronomical. The cheapest one wants $200/month just to have my box sit on their network taking up an IP. If I had dsl it wouldn't be a problem, I'd have static IP's, and my name servers and web servers could act independently again.

At any rate, the time to move on has come.

For some reason, domain name services have been my absolute most awful problem child lately. Our domain name servers at work were going down 3-4 times per day a while back. So we added a cron job to check for services and reload if they aren't running.

Now the machine itself will actually go down from time to time. I got sick of all this so I switched my domain name servers to my own servers, and I configured name services on my personal server. Solved, right?

Wrong. My domain registrar decided that instead of editing my name servers (which I had carefully planned out to overlap so there would be no interruption of service) they decided to delete my name servers. I have been without name services all day. All the resumes I've sent out over the last day are now worthless because when someone replies to one and their email comes back their confidence in me will be profoundly shaken.

To make it even worse, I have several people who rely on my now for email. Ok, rely is a strong word, but they're actively using it. Maybe their lives won't be tragically altered because of a lack for my server, but hell it makes me look bad goddammit. I don't like looking bad unless I'm completely to blame for it, and none of this bullshit is my fault.

I'm pissed, and I can't wait until my name services are redefined.

Oh, and one more thing -- Fuck you Directnic.

I'm tired of my job. I wake up in the morning, and I think to myself, "Dammit. I have to go to work."

I don't like feeling that way. It's time to change it.

I've redone my resume, and I thought I had a pretty good one going, but it doesn't seem to be doing much in the way of bringing in phone calls. I've been on ComputerJobs.com lately, and I've been applying to every web development, cold fusion, and html related position I can find in the Seattle, Portland, LA, DC, and Texas areas. Why those areas? I'll tell you why. I want to move to Seattle. It's a nice place. Portland is also nice, and is close to where I am no. It's also where my reserve duty is done.

LA is basically where I'm from originally. My daughter is there now with her mother. My best friend lives there. My uncle lives there (though we're currently estranged because I don't feel like calling them and putting up with their shit...maybe I'll rant about that some other time). I wouldn't mind going back to my beaches. I'd really like it actually.

I miss DC sometimes. My life sucked while I lived there previously. I would like to live there with a life that does not suck. I think it would be very nice.

Texas is where my parents are. It is also where the computer jobs are apparently. There are more jobs in Texas than there are in the entire Pacific Northwest and lower eastern seaboard combined. Coincidence? I'm sure it is as much a coincidence as it is that my resume is generating no phone calls.

I guess I'll have to rebuild it because it's apparently not "dazzling" enough.

Time to sparkle.

How did we ever come up with the saying: "Go off". I can't think of a single context in which that could apply to the meaning we actually give it today. Oh well it doesn't matter.

I'm going to do it anyway.

Boy oh boy have I neglected to use this forum, and man have I regretted it.

I ordered the FreeBSD cd, and the credit card was declined. That's odd. It's a company credit card. "Oh, we didn't get the payment there in time. Wait a couple of days and try it again." Denied again. Finally I just gave it to the accounting folks, and the cd showed up like 2 weeks later. That was but a small hint of things to come.

The owner's daughter has been hired as a purchasing/accounting type person to help our growing pains since my boss quit. She is now in his office, which she and the owners keep locked. This is pointless because everyone in the office has a key. When we were told she was coming in to work, it was originally to do pro bono work on a regular 9 to 5 schedule. She wouldn't be paid at first. Then we found out that she was being paid for the time that she was "working" (which she really wasn't working), but her check was coming out of our San Jose office. This wasn't too bad. I didn't mind as long as my hard work wasn't paying for her sorry butt.

Then when my boss quit we got told she'd be working regular shifts with us as our purchasing agent, and she'd be in his office. Her paycheck also now comes out of our coffers (which are already lean enough as it is). To date, she has come in on time only once or twice. Now I run a laid back schedule. If you're within 15-20 minutes of the mark, you're there on time. Our hours are typically 9-5. If you make it in by 9:20 or so I'm not complaining. She came in at 10:00 or so today, and I was utterly amazed. Typically she shows up anywhere between 12:30 and 3:00 (which does us no good because the day is more than half gone at that point).

Let's make it interesting while we're at it. Monday afternoon at about 4:30, I turn around in our office to see someone completely foreign walk into our nether areas towards our community sink. My co-werker and I both looked at each other with the same thought written on our faces: "Who the fuck was that, and why is he back here?" My co-werker left shortly thereafter without saying anything. As I was walking out at 5:15, I noticed she was in her office, her sister was there, both of their boyfriends were there (one of them was the strange fellow we'd seen a few minutes prior), and 2 other people were there that I had no idea who they were. One of them was at our main accountant's computer plucking away at something. That is a security breach of monumental proportions.

I took it upon myself as lead tech basically (which I'm not really, my co-werker and I are equals...but I have more brass) to install Windows 2000 professional on the main accountant's system. This would then remove any possibility that some chucklehead would be logging onto that machine without some serious know-how. Next day, I got a phone call from the owner. "Why did you put Windows 2000 on that machine?" He really tried to dress me down, but I stuck to my guns. I explained to him the exact circus that the office had become, and I told him exactly how I had put the installation on the machine (by removing the original drive to preserve it, and replacing it with a better drive). I explained to him that it was a security risk that he might be able to live with, but I was not about to accept under any pretense.

My dressing down got a little lighter at that point, though I sensed he was still miffed at me. Now they have taken the original drive from off my desk and hidden it in the "locked" office. These kinds of high schoolish antics might fly somewhere else, but this is not professional behavior. This man entrusts me with a very large portion of his company's assets and responsibilities. Yet when I make an on the spot decision that affects the security and management of our local office, he flies off the handle. Very unprofessional, in my opinion. Maybe I did overstep my bounds on that machine, but someone had to ante up the sack to do it.

Those are just the least of our worries. This morning the company cell phones got turned off for lack of payment. All 3 of the owner's daughters have cell phones. I'm curious to know if their cell phones were turned off as well for lack of payment. I know the owner's wasn't turned off because if it was, he'd be out of a job down in the San Jose office. I also found out (on the lowdown) from the main accountant that the health insurance will not be renewed when the time comes. We have heard nothing on either issue from the owner or his wife (co-owner and finance manager). They didn't tell us the phones were going down. I needed it very much this morning and it wasn't available. I have 6 saved voicemails I need to respond to. I can't get to them because of this now. The health insurance isn't such a big deal for me. I can live without it because I very rarely see the doctor, and I don't lead an active, risky lifestyle. What galls me is the fact that we haven't been told any of this yet.

This tells me that they do not consider us to be people who are in the same boat. They don't realize that we have a lot invested in this company as well. I will grant you, I don't have near as much the financial stake that they have invested, but my co-werker is in his 40's. He doesn't have a lot of options when this company goes out of business. This company is going out of business. They can't live without me at the moment, and if the owner has to replace me it'll take him away from his responsibilities in the San Jose office. That'll force that office to close, and it's the only office making money at the moment.

I used to be happy at this job. Even with my old boss's micromanagement, I was happy. I woke up in the morning, and I smiled a cheery smile as I downed 44 ounces of Pepsi. Now I wake up with the thought: "Fuck, I have to go to work." It courses through my head first thing every morning now. That's not how I want to be.

It's time to rebuild the resume. I have to go find a little slice of happiness somewhere else.
