And in another major news Jakob Nielsen does not talk about micropayments in his predictions.

Clay Shirky's brilliant article : The Case Against Micropayments. The short answer why micropayments would not succeed is "users do not like them". The possible alternatives to micropayments could be aggregation, subscription and subsidy. Weblogs is an example of subsidy. A must read.

Web Had Humble Beginnings : A nice article on the early days of the web. I am always amazed by people like TBL who are somehow motivated by things other than money. A decent look into TBL's view of the web. One interesting thing is that the lab in which he was working was not at all enthusiastic about the web. Well, talk about missed opportunities.

What do you do when you have become a multimillionaire by selling your portal at the peak of the internet hype? You dish out some shit.

December 19, 2000

Only a week back I linked to the Business Week article comparing Amazon with Walmart. Well Walmart is a recurring theme in my surfing today.

First Peterme is working as the acting Director of User Experience for them. This is one more example of people shifting to more earthier, less-sexy jobs. Just read his rant on how he would prefer to work on intranet jobs now.

Second is an interview of Jim Breyer the VC behind walmart.com, who apparently was ridiculed during the internet boom and is now hailed as a visionary. Anyway, the interview has some good points about how walmart can integrate its online and offline purchases.

Unhappy that your site does not look as good as those designers. Well, take a look at how their sites looked when they launched them.

Where have all the designers gone? Zeldman thinks that more and more Web designers seem less and less interested in web design. They are more interested in cool technologies like flash and DHTML. Not that anything is wrong with these technologies, but sites that do not use these would not find many designers.

A decent history of computer science : Forget the references to MIT.

Pete Townsend's memory of lennon's death. Not to be missed. Found this via an excellent weblog. A lot of other great links. A must see.

Good rant on the upsides of the downturn.
Note: Looks like this link is not working. So check out the main page of her site where the rant is still there.

Hotmail: You Get What You Pay For : Even I am one of the people stuck in the soup. I was not able to access my mails for three days. In spite of all my efforts to ask people to use my new address, they keep on sending mails to the old hotmail address.

I have started a more personal blog of my random musings. It is interestingly called The last song of thornbird and other bullshit.

hilarious thread in Slashdot about the advertisement supported free software. (sparked by opera)

Good news for all ye usenet freaks who do not have a usenet access. Deja is back to its old format. They have sold their precision buying (yuck) service to half.com. Well, "stick to knitting", the wise man would say.

Walmart.com vs. Amazon: This Race Isn't Even Close : Wall-mart looks like a brochure created to sell its products. Amazon influences the buying process by introducing user reviews, related items, your page and similar stuff which makes it absolutely different from the retail stores.

The day I killed my dot-com : The shutting down of a dotcom from the perspective of the founder. Everyone has to make tough choices in life I guess.

A site dedicated to T-Shirts ?. Yeah, that is web for you.

Beautiful piece of flash at K10K.

Gifford Pinchot - The Gift Economy : A brilliant article explaining the nature of gift economy and why it is important in today's world.

Gallery of Data Visualization inspired by Tufte.

CNET.com - Defunct ASPs leave customers in the lurch. Read my article in a similar vain. ASP - is it another hype? .

What's wrong with the computer is not hardware; it's connectivity. Clay Shirky's interview. Some good points.

Jakob Nielsen's WAP Field Study Findings : 70% of the users say that they would not use the service again. interesting

Well, I am back from the vacation. It was great to be with my family for 5 days. So a bonus of a lot of linky goodness

Will Google's Purity Pay Off? : Google has based its revenue model mainly on the enterprise sales of the search services, unlike all its competitors like altavista, northernlight and alltheweb which generate revenues with banner ads, old news and stuff. Will this pay of?

In my opinion, this is the best strategy one could adopt. Advertising is not going to work as well in the future as it did, in the long run. And the planted result would create a massive problem for the reputation of the search engine/directory. I feel google could become the next yahoo if they keep on enhancing their core technology.(which is way better than any other competition.

A totally different way to do a weblog.

The VC Comic : Too real, Too funny.

What can the technology innovators learn from artists? Though it seems that most of the technological innovation seems to come from young people that is not true. This is a lot similar to painters whose innovation also seems to be at a peak in their youth.

Peter Morville discusses the Ethics of Information Architecture.
My Thoughts It is very important that to realise that by lebeling anything we are attaching meaning that never existed before, or was not thought of before. Lebeling can created new meaning, attach political and social significance. So be careful while lebeling.

Added a new article on usability review of the new music site Musicworld4u. Usually I would have bitched about this in my log. But i spent a lot of time on the site and was massively frustrated as I thought this site has a huge collection of music and just design could screw its future.
