It seems that, during the blogathon, the haiku was considered (very lightheartedly) the bottom-of-the-barrel post. HOWEVER, I think it absolutely necessary to show love to the "poet's prayer". It doesn't have to be hypertraditional to be serious, either. So, in an effort to show support, I will post a haiku with every post, or an acceptable substitute (sonnet?) with every post until the end of the year. =] They will come from every facet of my colorful (and sometimes deranged) personality.
Open up this book;
there is a leaf inside it

I finished the music. I can't get people out of the studio for vocals. I'm still awake. What a day.
2:03 PM
And so the blogathon comes to the end. I'm not going to sleep until I finish the track I am working on. I will post it as soon as it is done!! Thanks everyone so much for everything. SAFE appreciates your help!!!

Processing effects can really be mind boggling. Try to read up on the parameters of effects before you use them. I have impatiently tried to do things and toggled until was able to figure it out, but I have never been able to duplicate it without gaining a better understanding of settings.

Using a microphone with a computer has several problems. One of the largest, though, is hum from the computer itself. Pickup a windscreen from RadioShack for about 4 dollars, and if you are still getting pops on the microphone, there is a problem with the placement of the microphone in relation to the user's mouth. Two very effective methods of solving this problem are to a) put a kitchen spattergaurd between the mouth and the microphone and b) stretch nylon hosiery across a bent hanger and place it between the microphone and the mouth. The books I have seen indicate that this will provide professional quality results. Of course, as always, I am a second-hand source; I encourage you to do your own research.
12:40 PM
for controlling midi, one needs some kind of device. The more one spends on hardware, less adept one need be with software to produce professional quality sound. However, the interfaces in software are often based in hardware, which means that one should probably give software an extensive learning before approaching the hardware end of the production process. It will give one a better idea of what one needs and what options are available.
12:00 PM
I'm currently blogging tracking tips for building audio with a computer. I'm trying to keep myself entertained for the rest of the 'thon and still come up with a product.
11:59 AM
There is often a process of realigning rhythms if your melody and drum track aren't working together. It's usually a good idea to either follow a very standard rhythm pattern or completely plan out the drum track's mathematics. Although it is not always the case, in-betweeners are much harder to pull off.
11:36 AM
For midi I prefer to use Winjammer. Shareware version is available at
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm(Shareware Music Machine). For wav editing, Acid wav is great, with a great scripting language (especially if you already know java or vbscript), and you can get it in the same place.
11:09 AM
I'ts very important to not just poop music out on your listener in one big lump. You must build the poop pile slowly, if you want the good shit, Maine.
10:35 AM
To accomplish laying the beat I started by recording some of the drum samples in hammerhead drum machine into wave files from hammerhead's stream-to-disk option. Then, I imported the wav files as samples in my tracker, ModPlug Tracker. All of the software is available from http://www.hitsquad.com/smm. I trimmed off the extra silence (hammerhead records a whole measure) and started laying the basic rhythm.

I'm now going to make a serious attempt at making some music. =]

I am in punk rock mode. This is an extra post to catch up for ISP ick. Green Day: She. It's very bright outside and should soon get very hot. It's also very loud in here. =]
8:59 AM
My ISP Crapped out on me for the 8:30 post. I am drinking Mint Tea, eating pineapples, and listening to the Nine Inch Nails version of Joy Division's Dead Souls. It's time for the song by song dj action. Next: New Order - Regret, full volume. I'm swinging hard.
8:06 AM
I flex my muscles as I begin my 18th hour of blogging!!!!! This goes out to everyone who is kicking ass!!!
8:03 AM
I have not yet begun to fight. I have a secret weapon waiting in the freezer.
Turiya and Walidah left me an organic chocolate bar with espresso beans that is waiting comfortably in the freezer for my arrival. Love prevails.

It's funny how being accustomed to somethying makes it much easier for that something to come into your life. Seeing education as a young child prepares a child to embrace education. Experiencing depression creates an enormous influx of depressed people in one's life.

Erica is watching me get down in the tiny room that will eventually be the computer studio for the Southmore House. It was once the office for an auto garage. And it has no air conditioner. I have been here since before 2:00pm. It is now 5:00am. I have until 2:00pm today. Thank god for the ceiling fan.

I don't fear night.
But I still fear the long yawns on the road and the deep, sneaky patriotism.
2:47 AM
This is a gratuitous entry to tell everyone about the Southmore House. I am a member and resident of the Southmore House artistic community in Houston, Texas. We have a quarter of a city block, including a house, a duplex, and a warehouse. We host events every tuesday, including monthly Poetry Slams, Gallery Showings, Drum Nights, and Acoustic Nights. Last night we had touring poets Turiya Autry and Walidah Imarisha from Portland, Oregon perform at our venue, preceded by three local poets. Check them out at
poetry off the page.
2:33 AM
Things are getting a little wild and crazy in the blog chats on AIM. As I indicated to the other bloggers, I haven't used that nasty little prog-beasty in years. The things we'll do for charity!!
2:06 AM
Halfway there, and I have implemented a text-based solution to the web-ring problem. Music will start soon. =] Food!!!
1:31 AM
No success. It looks like time for desperate measures. =]
1:04 AM
No luck yet on the ring. 11 hours down!!! I feel Kung-Fu already. I'd like to start on the caffeine early to keep from deep lows, so I'll step afk for a sec to get some Whole Foods Market Minty Green. Iced, FYI. Write me with your favorite apple!
spaceboy86@post.com.
12:36 AM
I might be able to put a song before the night is over. I'd like to try. There is a blues song I've done some work on and I'd like to share. =]
12:26 AM
just to let everybody know, I'm not being a bastard about the ring - I am having a nasty time getting it to show up. I'm not sure why. I'll see what I can do.
12:05 AM
Since I have finished most of my administrative tasks, I am now going to switch over into creative mode. My ring-link is, to quote pika-grrl, "being a whore." lol. I am on AIM as frex86. It's funny, I haven't logged on in several years, but apparently, they expect this to be cradle-to-grave. =]

11:36 PM
It was nothing short of a flying leap, when I sped gleefully to the terminal, to remind everyone that I am blogging for charity, and will be doing so until 2:00pm CST tomorrow. =]

It's the roll and thrum of the trick snippets that make me turn my head,
turn my head,
turn my head and
its the sull and strum of each thick triplet that make me want to hammer nails into walls,
nails into walls
nails into dogwood
and pine needles into the sides of my bare feet as we
roll into the forest
on spread sheets
-spread bed sheets
to protect our sweet comfort from the
biting line of ants
--
to protect our sweet comfort from
the biting lines that build tension
grain by grain
in ant-hills
--
It's the song and clipped sillhouette of your free words
that hums my hind-brain
frees my mind
asks me to flee my world
and abstain from time
to hammer nails into
walls
nails into dogwood and walls
to break bellies
like waves against the morning
and wander out into the woods
and spread a sheet,
a bed sheet on dark pine needles,
eclipsing sunrise and hunger to
let morning wait.

I am looking forward to a time when my environment is less polluted by the television. Later this evening, I should be so lucky. Until then, more about SAFE. From the
Mission Statement,
SAFE tries to put back into the person her sense of self-confidence as well as self-respect, control, and all around mental stability from which abuse takes so much away.
SAFE is not an organization targeted at only children and teenagers who have been sexually, physically, or emotionally abused. SAFE is also concerned with the children who are not necessarily abused but who show potential signs of distress. These are children and teenagers who are just in need of some kind of help.

9:33 PM
It's been a crazy day so far, and I am having difficulties with a couple of my blogs. Nonetheless, I hope everyone else is feeling as well as I!! =]
9:04 PM
Well, the new site is up. I'll continue to work on polishing it for the evening. Commentary would be appreciated at
spaceboy86@post.com. Keep On Bloggin'!
8:48 PM
And say hello to my new face!
8:03 PM
New site launch in t-30 minutes.
7:39 PM
We've all seen the short term implications of blog. Rapid communication. New outlets for bumbling public bleeding. I ask, "What will the long term effects be?" It's really very scary to think that people who might otherwise hold on to physical journals will lose their blogs to the aether. The diametric, that people who might otherwise lose journals into moving boxes and missing sock land will have a fairly permanent store of their past feelings, is equally bizarre. Do journalers blog more than they would otherwise write?
7:06 PM
The first five hours are gone and I'm feeling alll-right. Aphex twin is on an anti-drug commercial in the background. It makes me fairly happy. Not to disrespect responsible marijuana smokers, it's not my dig and I'm glad someone with some kind of aesthetic sense has tried to minimize the impact of use on society. The commercials when I was a kid were hideous. Marylou Retton. Gag.
6:01 PM
GRRRRRR. I am hungry. I ate lentil soup last night. It made me less hungry. If I eat it tonight, will it have lost its potency? Will it satisfy my hunger? I am so hungry. GRRRRR. R.
5:37 PM
Pieces of me rained down on my bed last night. Pieces of me fall on the ground as I type. It is a salty rain, I am frustrated with sunburn, and I am shiny.
5:06 PM
I promised a little about SAFE, and so I will drop a little information here and there throughout the blogathon. SAFE is a non-profit organization that is citizen funded. Abuse is a cycle. SAFE's goal is to help kids break that cycle and eliminate the self-destructive behavior that takes the lives of so many abused children.
4:48 PM
Quiet numbs the warehouse I sit in. Everyone else fell away from this very hot day in Texas, indentured to daily tasks and rituals. I hear the sullen blizzard of whizzing white noise from fans and computers; none of them care to speak. Pink Floyd barely tears the styrofoam thickness of the sound. It barely hides the gnawing of Microsoft Internet Explorer eating one post after another in a top-heavy, bird-like fashion.
4:08 PM
I spent so long on my last post that I ran over into new post time. New post time is sacred territory. I will perform rituals to protect it in the future. =]
3:56 PM
Turiya Autry and Walidah Imarisha are
Good Sista Bad Sista. They deflect injustice with a punch to flatten tanks. They performed last night at the Southmore House, and I ended up taking them back to the bus station. Being on the bus for 57 hours is enough to drive anyone mad. They satisfy their stircraziness with snacks and slumber. I've never seen anyone get so crazy with a cup of soup. We went to Kroger on Montrose to grab them grub for the road. It's very interesting what you can learn about a person from their favorite apple.
Gala. Always sweet, always crunchy, always smooth, always available (at least in Texas).
Fuji. Less sweet, always crunchy, always grainy, usually available.
Braeburn. Sweet like gala, mild and grainy, usually available.
Turiya and I dig Galas. Manic, loud, crunchy, mad passionate apples. Veronica and Walida are Fuji folk. Tempestuous and stormy, powerful, frenetic pommes. Doug does Braeburn. A little bit of everything. I don't know about Red Delicious. It's not my dig. And may the seas protect us from the ones who get on the with Granny Smith.

Chris the fuzzy demon just walked in to ask how it was going. If you are just stopping by for the first time, let me remind you to come back by this evening to check out my new garb!

2:05 PM
Keep your eye on me for the next couple of hours as I complete last minute changes in a major site overhaul, and just in time to support the SAFE center in the 24 hour blogathon. More about SAFE to come!
2:02 PM
Well it seems to be time to start the 24 blogathon! Hello everyone!

Something really nasty has happened. I'm fighting to troubleshoot this disgusting flying image with one of the Developers I work with and we have no solutions. She's pointed me to Zeldman, but I don't have time now. If you have any ideas please e-mail me at
spaceboy86@post.com. I'll save you the time of asking - we've checked and triple checked for missing tags/tag pieces, style elements, etc. Really nasty.

I'd dig a reasonable solution to caffeine culture. How does one dedicate 7000 hours a day to a science without drinking half that number of cups of coffee? I ought to drop drip-nasty percobombs on the beaners until their hearts inflate. With good intentions, of course =].

I've been moving my personal effects into the Southmore House, where I am now a resident. It's amazing the things that eight people can accomplish over the course of a week. We've pulled out all of the carpets, sorted out three hundred pounds of clothing for goodwill, moved a piano, learned to make pizzas on a barbecue grill, and thrown a performance art festival. I must admit that there is so much left to do that we don't feel like we've accomplished anything. The walls and floors in the new house need a lot of work, and we need to locate a stove. One of our housemates is literally bleeding with poison sumac allergies. Nevertheless, the indeperformance art day was a success, and our new location is steadily progressing towards user-friendliness.
And on the fourth, the moognasty Entertainment System blew pop sensibility into the smog oblivion of a fire-worked Houston sky. Coo, doveys; Coo!

When I started this dig a year ago, I was digging for bones. I had surrounded myself with a hundred years of open minds. I wanted to know what had opened them, so I looked in the sand that fell off of them. The more I watched, the more the sand fell. Each one an hourglass, they laid hundreds of miles of desert in the middle of a forest. I dug past sand and silt. I fell through soil to crumbled stone. I found roots. I followed the roots back to the surface, and in the baking sun and cold breeze, they stretched into the flesh of a long, pale foot. It was the strangest thing there is to see - I imagined the foot to be my own. Whether or not it was, I am not sure. Nevertheless, at the end of the foot was a leg, and another beside the first, that led to my trim-but-not-toned belly and up to my pierced ears. I watched the wind make impressions on my thick hair. I watched my eyes. The rooted me did not seem to see me. He watched the edge of the world, at peace, tracking various birds and dust-devils as they disappeared behind hills and into the crevices of the horizon. I saw my other and wondered how I could bring people to this place. I wondered how I could share this sense with people with common interests. I have to admit I haven't spent the time I needed to spend on the project. The open sky consortium has not yet once involved a consort, though I desperately wish that weren't the case. I am seeing, through my interactions with the Southmore House, that all it really takes to get people involved is to ask. I hope that, when it is alive, the Houston Storytellers' Union will accomplish the tasks that opensky has seeded over the last year. It is with this mission that I come to you now, and will continue to come to you indefinitely.

4:59 PM
I was watching Dancer in the Dark some time early on the ninth when I saw my porch float away. I yelled at my housemate Doug that we had a problem. He said, in a manner much like Dorothy Gale would, "Oh, Jon, we've got to get out of here." We didn't want to get electrocuted. We went out the backdoor and I jumped in, prepared to swim. It only turned out to be two and a half feet deep, but my body seemed to keep falling and falling. Only for an instant - I quickly snapped back into the coleslaw-sweet sharpness of rain cascading down my face. We fought the current tanking down the slight grade of the driveway; we had water hanging off of our bodies like tattered zombie garb. It was trench warfare. We had to get across the street. We had to tell Nathan to move his Daewoo. We had to get Erin to shuffle her Beetle out of the driveway. My old ghetto Jetta would just have to survive. I hated to leave it in the rising waters, but my keys were trapped behind enemy lines.
We felt Rick struggle to catch up as he joined from the cottage behind. He seemed to be driven out of his foxhole because noone else was left. We felt it, whatever it was that Noah felt before the numbness set in; We felt it in an "oh no oh no, oh no, oh no oh no" sort of way. We felt the wounded, drowning beneath our feet. For Doug and I, it started with the paranoid psychodelia of dirty plastic porch chairs rocking in near darkness. Rick felt water prickling his toes as he wrote e-mails at his girlfriend Sonja's computer. But the fear of death pulled in instincts and we became sinuous cats of war and mechanized men. My muscles were tenser than they were the first time I clenched in orgasm. I was scared and raw and determined. We couldn't hear our own breath for the rain. We could barely hear ourselves pounding at the landlord's house or the garage apartment behind it where Dave and Nathan live. We told Erin to run. She managed to pull her car away before the water swallowed it. Nathan had passed out upstairs after a night of drinking. He wasn't so lucky. It took us five minutes to convince him something important was about to happen, and his car was at least a foot and a half lower than Erin's had been to begin with. He couldn't get it out.
Everyone was red faced and engorged with adrenaline. We kept fighting and struggling for something to do, but what can one do? Within half an hour, water had filled the low spot where the house sits and stopped flowing into the yard. It had started flowing through it and out instead. The street became a river. We tried to make it back to the front door, but there was still a light on inside. Rick could feel the electricity coursing through his legs as he scrambled to grab his cat. Our cats made it to high ground.
The landlord's house was open and we were welcome on his much higher ground. We watched as sheds floated down the road and our cars went farther and farther under. Nathan's Daewoo ended up fully submerged, in the same parking spot that usually gets no more than a half inch. Doug has still not been able to resolve his insurance claim. My car only runs because my father came out on monday and helped me fix it. Monday was my twenty-second birthday. I cleaned rain-diluted urine out of my automobile and cupboards. I threw away the couch I had spent a great deal of money and some thirty hours reupholstering. It was priceless to me. A piece of my artwork had been sitting on a table when it flooded. It is stretched across a wooden palette (like they have at grocery stores) and weighs at least 50 lbs. I had put one nail into the top to keep it from falling and killing a cat. The table floated away and left it suspended by one nail.
We later pulled up all of the linoleum and much of the underlying concrete in the living room. The drywall was pulled off of the bottom four feet of the living room wall. I want to tell you about the amazing sense of community we had. It was there. But I am so tired, and the sense of the community is always there. It is the horror that is new to me.

Watching an editor bleed on your draft is like staring into a very deep well and insisting on seeing the bottom. It's foolish. It's dragging oneself into the deepest muck. The only way to satisfy the insecurities is to be consumed by them. But my, how hard it is to ignore.
