i think working at a school has gotten to me again. but i don't work with kids (at least not yet) so i'm a little confused by this one. anyway, i'm in a classroom full of kids and they're out of control. i start begging, pleading, then yelling at them to be quiet and settle down. suddenly, madonna, who is also in the class (i told you i don't understand) starts clapping, mocking me for my class management skills. i forget what happens next, but after a while the class settles down and i thank madonna for making fun of me, which spurred me on to better classroom management tactics. she gives me a hug. i get instant respect from the class for being someone that madonna would give a hug to. i wake up to what i think are gunshots outside my window. hopefully they weren't... friday, june 22
two things i heard kids say to their moms while walking down one block this morning. kid a: "mom, i know the secret to life." kid b: "i do NOT smell like stinky cheese!" thursday, june 21
last post of the day, perhaps. the other day, the back end of the station where i normally wait, was full of smoke. a section of the track was white and this is where the smoke was coming from. a cop jumped down into the track, dumped out a bottle of water onto the track, and proceeded to claim victory over the fire. he even radioed his PO buddies ... gotta admit that it worked. but i would hope that it's standard practice to put out fires with more than just a poland spring bottle. yesterday, the exact opposite happened. the subway car i was in was like niagra falls. the air conditioner was leaking. everywhere. at first, i just thought that i had to avoid sitting in a wet spot. but then it started pouring out the ceiling every time the train lurched, which it does a lot. and it seemed to spill on me no matter where i moved. i just can't win sometimes.
mabel's been a roach-killing machine. and when roaches come around, they're not small, by any stretch of the imagination. they're LARGE mothers. but mabel is great about hunting them down. this morning in the bathroom -- she loves the bathroom -- she swallowed something. i noticed that there were what seemed to be parts of the outer shell of a roach. alison said she saw two legs and other parts. guess what, folks? my cat eats roaches! no wonder there's always so much kibble left!
i saw old 97s the other week. they were pretty damn good ... probably the best i've seen them. seem 'em three times. the josh joplin group opened for them. i actually liked them. but WOW were they loud. my ears didn't stop ringing (they've been ringing on and off for years, but i'm talking about unusual ringing) until three or four days after. that REALLY sucked. i think the next concert i go to, i'm going to wear earplugs. i'm such a wimp. monday, june 11
saturday was a bad night. after attending the douglas leader boat show, i had too much to drink. i fell into a pile of garbage sitting on a street corner. i nearly fell into the subway tracks. both times, i took alison down with me. she has bad bruises on her knees. the bergen street subway station's floor had seen better days by the time i was through with it. what a night. thursday, may 31
yesterday, i heard something on the subway that made my inner-nerd (if it's even that much of a hidden thing) want to cry. some little kid was talking to his mom about school and was complaining about a kid who put glue in his hair. his mom said something about telling the school to split them up if they're in the same class next year and the kid said something like,"but he's not in my class anymore. he got transferred to special ed. it's like a vacation!" so sad. but i'm happy for him. he seemed so relieved. sunday, may 27
the naked chef is a pretty damn good show, too. no, it's not him, it's the food. i'm totally addicted to foodtv ... one of these days, maybe i'll even cook something.
my phone works. so does my DSL. thank god. anyway, i've become an enormous fan of "Iron Chef" in the past couple of weeks. so it's on five times a week, with the potential for three different episodes over those five showings. f-ing GREAT stuff. i'm getting all sorts of excited for IC3, where morimoto and bobby flay will rematch last year's battle. man, it's just TOO GOOD. if you're not familiar with the premise of the show, Takeshi Kaga is supposed to be this ... um ... eccentric millionaire who is the chairman of the gourmet academy in tokyo and spent his fortune building kitchen stadium. the stadium is where challengers and the iron chefs face off in their various battles. (chefs would seem a natural for battles anyway ... they've got scads of sharp things.) ANYWAY, the "chairman" is a FRAUD! he's an (gasp!) actor! he's been jean valjean in les miserables and even jesus christ in the self-titled superstar. i honestly thought some of kaga's role was real ... at least the cooking's real. (speaking of which, the iron chef italian - masahiko kobe - thoroughly whooped some ass over the challenger in the battle giant lobster.) monday, may 21
saturday, i was in the middle of FTPing something and my DSL modem dropped its connection. when i plugged a telephone into its walljack, there was no dialtone. none of the jacks in the apartment had a dialtone. ugh ... time to call verizon repair. repair told me that the earliest they'd get to it was monday. that sucked, but what can you do? it's now monday and after being told on sunday that they wouldn't need to get into the apartment -- "our guys traced the problem to cabling outside of your apartment" -- they rang to get in the apartment. luckily, alison was there. yay! they fixed the problem ... sort of. no DSL access. away they went to fix it, making the phone not work again. called to get a status report and was told, by repair, "it should be fixed between now and wednesday." WHAT? how do you argue with the company that controls the world? (or at least the east coast...) |
