Continuing with my "love affair with technology," there's a new member in my tech family. "ViD" is a Visor Deluxe, blue. He plays very nice with "Ti" (Titanium Powerbook) who's only a month older. They both join "Snappy 2" (Olympus Camedia C-21 digital camera) and "Mulcahey" (Nike psa 120, MP3 player). I also have an electric toothbrush named "SeeSaw" (....kidding about the toothbrush!). 5.7.2001
Julie and I have found a new grounding. We will probably always stay good friends, keeping in touch, but doing our own stuff. I haven't heard from her in about a week. She's traveling in some strange country, I forget (it's not London of course). I'll be moving to Austin soon and will get a place of my own. I can't wait!!! I haven't had a place of my own for a while. The place I'm at now in Bloomington isn't too shabby, believe me, but there's something very personally-empowering about having your own place. I've been looking forward to being on my own again for at least a good 6 months now, not reporting to anyone, not being validated by another, and so on. Also, I've lost my productive focus in Bloomington and need a change of scenary to buckle down and finish this dissertation monster. Finding a decent paying tech-related job in Austin would be nice too. Creating new friends in foreign land, setting new guidelines, being exposed to new life experiences, it's all very excited and I think almost necessary for me to do every so often. I'm thinking Austin for a few years then just take it from there. Some people can't deal with ambiguity and uncertain life plans. I think I'm the opposite.
Side note: It cost about $1000 to put sperm into a cryobank (i.e., sperm bank) and about a $75 a year to preserve it. Hmmm. An interesting thought. Oh, that reminds me of a joke about the guy that got fired from working at the sperm bank because he was caught "drinking on the job." :-p 2.28.2001
I admit: I have a love affair with technology. I just blew most of my savings on one of those new Titanium G4 Powerbooks a few days ago. And today, I sold my Gibson Epiphone acoustic guitar today for $125 and ALSO (by coincidence) bought 256mb of RAM for the powerbook for about the same price. Kind of shows you where I'm placing priorities. :-) 1.21.2001
Have you heard of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"? It supposed to be the new Rent. (It's a musical, in case you're unfortunately clueless about Rent.) Hegwig has been off-Broadway for 3 years now but the creators just came up with a movie version that is expected to kick at the upcoming Sundance film festival. Anyway, I dig the 2nd song called "Origin of Love". Get it here. The idea is that love is really the pain of being separated from your other half. ...an excellent, creative song, that rocks. 1.2.2001
Well, it's been over a week now and I'll tell you this: I'd rather have Julie around again than get a new computer. 12.22.2000
There are two things I love right now--the cold, consistent, blue glow of technology and the warm, unpredictable, green eyes of Julie. During the next week or two, I'm getting a brand new machine as my girl moves to London for at least 6 months. It's a simultaneous upgrade (mind) and downgrade (heart). |
