As usual, Fred Rogers has the answer. Frankly, I'm frustrated by the fact that the President can't speak extemporaneously. At all. Take a look at any of Giuliani's press conferences in the last several days; even his "prepared remarks" are dlivered with candor, honesty, and energy. The missives coming from the White House are robotic by comparison. |

In regard to the banner headline, Bastards!, there was an excellent point made on MetaFilter: American friends of mine have criticised UK press beause they reckon it becomes difficult to separate fact from opinion. I'm torn between agreeing and arguing that what they take for fact in their own papers is simply opinion in different clothes [...] |

In attempting to make a fresh tank of coffee for the engineering floor, I discovered that I could not remove the coffee pot from its warming platform due to the layer of coffee slag gluing the pot down.
It was at this point that I decided to clean some of our coffee equipment. |

Something's terribly wrong with my hands. I can't seem to draw anything. | ||
| 7:00 pm | I always see those little boxes of pre-packaged sushi at my local gourmet qrocery store, and I always wonder if they're any good.
Oh so tasty. (Good thinq I also had two bottles of soy sauce on-hand. Why two? To take up more space in my cupboard, of course!) |

I don't really know what to say about this. There's a year of my life down the drain, and blamed on me. Whoopty-doo. |

Some have referred to our stock price as a tragedy, or similar. I prefer to think of it as a distributed denial-of-money attack. |

Ray Bradbury interviewed by Salon: If you can't read and write you can't think. Your thoughts are dispersed if you don't know how to read and write. You've got to be able to look at your thoughts on paper and discover what a fool you were. This is also wonderful and totally true: What do you mean "in human terms"?You know, that's the secret of my relationship with my wife too. We eat together, all the time, in new and old venues, and tell each other new and old stories. It's so true. (Maybe a city is like a huge marriage.) |

Chris, Alicia, and Ingrid came over to watch The Sopranos tonight. We showed Alicia the box of goodies that Palm gave us on Friday.
Among the goodies is a pack of Cell-O-Mints, which seem to be postage-stamp-sized slivers of some kind of uaearthly mint plastic. "It's like a condom for your tongue!" Alicia, 8/26/01 7:53 pm |

Palm acquires assets from Be for $11MM in PALM while hiring away key talent. Dave Winer has written an epitaph. There's a story at the dot. c|net: "The Palm-Be deal marks a rather inglorious end to the company that Gassee launched when he left Apple in 1990." In other news, the previous head of the platform group has resigned. |

From one of my recently-de-employed colleagues: "Ford," he said, "how many escape capsules are there?"...ran into it in a rumor file, figured I had to pass it back to /someone/ |

Hmm. I guess I wasn't really clear on this point: I'm still employed (where I have been for just over a year). The waters ahead are uncharted, and we're all a little seasick, but we do like sailing. |

After a little digging, I found the offical announcement that my concentration of study at Rice has gotten up and left for Boston. (They are, lamentably, late by a couple of years I moved from Rice to Boston in 1999. Then again, I'm no longer there, so maybe I shouldn't complain about PLT's transience.) |

I was going to wear something extra-casual today, as is my wont on Fridays, but since I'm going out in a big group to get dinner and to see Planet of the Apes I figured I'd dress it up a little. |

While doing the dishes this evening, I discovered that I can make wet wineglasses sing. This is a talent I did not know I posessed, and it took some practice, but I finally got a pretty clear resonant tone. Which leads me to my koan for the day: If the cats are looking at you funny, you know you're doing it right. |
