Notice to all born again patriots: The United States Code : Title 4, Chapter 1 carefully details the manner, disposition, location, rules and convention used to display the american flag.

Since this sudden wave of patriotism has passed over us, I've seen about 6 examples in the last week of improper flag display. Friday, for example, a local grocery store positioned a flag in it's window with scotch tape. Of course, the top two pieces of tape had let go and the flag was being displayed upside down. Not to mention that the flag had originally been positioned so that it was facing rightward to the store, but to the rest of the world, it was backward. I also saw another store yesterday with a flag similarly displayed in the window facing the wrong way. I've seen flags being flown on masts with corporate flags flown at the same height.

If you are going to be overcome by patriotism, fine, wonderful, have a great time. But, do take the time to learn a little bit about what you are doing. You simply cannot make up these things as you go along. For your superpatriots that don't have time to read due to your busy schedule of patriotic exhaltation, here are some basic guidelines:

1. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. this means stop putting it in windows the wrong way

2. No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America. This includes international flags, state flags, POW/MIA flags, and your stupid redwings/UofM flag.

3. Half-Staff - The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. Only by the order of the president of the United States, may the U.S. flag to be flown at half mast. This means when the flag at the capitol goes up, your should too

4. You flag cannot be flown at night unless it is permanently lit. Take it down at night, or get a floodlight on it

5. The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. So don't even think about it

6. The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

7. The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

8. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.

9. The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way. So get it off your car, there are rules about that too

10. The flag should never be used as a covering for a floor, wall, or ceiling.

11. The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

12. The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

13. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. Period. This is the most commonly broken rule

This has been another paxtonland service bulletin to the clueless.

Here is a very moving article In The Iranian called "Limbs of no body World's indifference to the Afghan tragedy" By Mohsen Makhmalbaf written on June 20, 2001: "If you read my article in full, It will take about an hour of your time. In this hour, 14 more people will have died in Afghanistan of war and hunger and 60 others will have become refugees in other countries. This article is intended to describe the reasons for this mortality and emigration. If this bitter subject is irrelevant to your sweet life, please don't read it." (via mefi)

How to prevent Terrorism, watch for it at home, do your research and know your enemy. Part of the reason the WTC was hit and vulnerable was because of a lack of preparedness. We can call agree on that.

Sadly, a quick search at Defense Link produced only rather 3 old articles... similar dismal results came from fbi.gov, cia.gov, and nsa.gov... what does that say about internal awareness campaigns? That is a story in and of itself. Also, the President's Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection website apparently hasn't been updated since 1998!

Afgha.com - Ahmad Shah Massoud died two days ago, Massoud was the leader of the Anti-Taliban. Check out the letter of warning written in 1998, warning of the terror that will follow. NY Times article covering and breaking the story Login required use: dean_paxton | password: uther)

He was the leader of the United Front, which controls about 5% of Afghanistan. They will, of course pledge help to the U.S., but are understandably angry that this has been allowed to go on so long and that the world has ignored their struggle. They have received some external Soviet and U.S. support, however, and I would expect this group of individuals to get a lot of attention very soon.

This is all very significant in that he was attacked last Sunday. Three days before the WTC attack. This is obviously a consipracy between the Taliban, Pakistan, and bin Laden... Immediately after the assassination attempt, there was speculation that the so-called United Front, a loose alliance of anti-Taliban forces, would fall apart. But the response to the attacks in America appears to have given new hope to those opposed to the Taliban. "The Americans will target the Taliban leadership," said Ahmed Rashid, a Pakistani journalist who has covered Afghanistan for 20 years. "It'll be messy, but in the end there will be a new government in Kabul."

Looks like some of the Taliban's officials have started fleeing Afghan capital during the growing expectations of a U.S. millitary action. Hundreds of regular citizens are probably either far ahead or, close behind.

Paula Poundstone Cops a Plea Striking a deal with the Los Angeles District Attorney's office, the comic pleaded no contest Wednesday to one count of felony child endangerment and one misdemeanor count of inflicting injury on a child, after prosecutors agreed to drop sex charges against her.

I suppose that they wouldn't have dropped them as a part of a plea if they were true. This is the kind of story that gets skipped in the shadow of huge news such as the latest events. I thought it should be pointed out. In fact, I'm not particularly fond of the way that E! penned the article. Sounds cold and somewhat indifferent. Since, it's not known for journalistic unbias, they can afford to editorialize a little bit.

Earlier tonight, I saw an interview with Schwarzkopf. He is now retired but I am sure that he is kept on retainer. Anyways, what he said seemed powerful, (not a direct quote, as close as my memory can bring forward) "this was a deliberate attack on innocent civilians. When we were in the gulf, we took extraordinary measures to the point of endangering our own pilots to make sure we did not hit targets containing innocents, that is the difference between us and those bastards." Now, the swearing was not improvised, he had made several statements like that during the interview, including, "we have several people in the military can be bad asses if we need them to be and handle most anything terrorists can throw at them". I say we bring him back into the fray baby, it is obvious that this world only respects power, the power that we at one time in America was at least perceived as having. And money does not always equate power, so do not relate this post in that manner. And finally, our intelligence gathering machine has been rendered ineffective primary because of political correctness of the 90s. Like somebody stated tonight in the news, we had better figure out quickly what game we are playing. This is not going to be a "rules of engagement" style fighting system anymore. *clink* here's a couple of pennies.

It was on June 20, 2001 that I posted "Osama bin Laden has threatened to assassinate George Bush" with a link to an article on Netscape. Dean's dad, David Paxton, posted the following to the follow up discussion:

You don't have the balls, Osama !
George is smarter than you, Osama !
Osama, you're blowing smoke,sand monkey !
P.S. If Osama does not read this would a Paxtonland reader please forward it?

So, which one of you troublemakers forwarded David's message?

Seriously, I'm not trying to make light. This man has been threatening the US for years, has made good on his threats on several occasions (including a previous bombing of the World Trade Center). Why doesn't the American public know who he is? When I heard the news this morning, I immediately started asking people if ben Laden was the suspect...intelligent business people in my community answered, "Who?"

This scares me. Get educated, people. Though I know I'm preaching to the choir posting this here.

There is a bum rush on all of the gas stations, everywhere. Me and Mike finally stopped at the unlikely station across from the Chevy Truck Plant and filled up, but only after a 6-8 car wait. I'm told, that's mild. Rumors are that station owners will not be selling gas after midnight. Hope that isn't true. I also hope that it is true and that I didn't just spend $1.89 a gallon (when it was $1.43 10 hours ago) because some opportunistic gas distributors are trying to get islamic gas stations owners killed by their patrons. Around here, that's an honest to god likely scenario.

He said he has overwhelming evidence that the man who beat him comfortably is the same man who defeated Boris Spassky, the Russian world champion, in an epic battle of the "superpowers" in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1972.

Afterward, Fischer disappeared from the public eye until 1992, when he briefly returned to play Spassky again for a 20th anniversary rematch in the then-pariah state of Serbia. Fischer won, then disappeared again, hotly pursued by the U.S. government, which had indicted him for breaking the United Nations embargo of Serbia.
