i'm learning
how to knit, and have been working a baby afghan
for the past month and a half. It's endless. So
I started knitting a sweater to break the monotony
of the freaking afghan.
I'm going
to London on October 6th.

Hands-on atom. And it's got a little xylophone thingamabob so you can excite the atom feverishly.
The Googolplex page. And I bet that makes you think of "Google", doesn't it?
AbsoluteAstronomy.com, where I just learned that Neptune's maximum distance from the Earth is 4,686,510,980 km. I must remember that if I am asked that question during a game of Trivial Pursuit, so I can impress my fellow players with my smarts. becky @ 12:38 PM | link
My hair is so short. I took my baby for a haircut at the salon, and I could just die from the cuteness of his modern little spiky 'do. It looked so cute that I decided to get my own hair hacked again right then and there, even though I just got it cut three weeks ago. So I did! And boy, oh boy is it short compared to the way it was before. Such a funky little bob haircut I have now, sans fringe and just above my chin. So let's worship the bob haircut together, shall we?

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: It goes on."
-Robert Frost
Here's a random thing I saw yesterday while out in the streets of Lyon:
Some guy in an apartment building yelling at the top of his voice, "Oh la laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Putain!" over and over. We couldn't see him, but everyone within a two-kilometer radius could hear him because his apartment window was open, and he was screaming loudly in an exaggerated way. It was kind of funny, but he was obviously disturbing his neighbors, because some old guy (with his gray hair a tousled mop atop his head and wearing a sleeveless t-shirt which, for some bizarre reason, reminded me of the Stanley Kowalski character from the play "A Streetcar Named Desire") in the apartment above the yeller's stuck his head out of his apartment window holding a makeshift fishing-pole type contraption with a plastic supermarket bag hanging from the end of it, and there was something in the bag because it made a rattling sound when the old guy used it to whack against the yeller's window pane. The yeller stuck his head out and looked up at the old guy, who looked back at him and said, "Shut up!". The yeller grinned and shut his window with a bang. The old guy smiled at the people who were looking at him from the street and then stepped away from the window.
And I bet that neighborly exchange happens everyday.
World Wide Pet Names Project...a compilation of nearly 8,000 names for your pet. And while we're on the subject, please take a moment to vote in my poll:
1) These black boots - ogle them. Don't they make you salivate madly?
2) A trip to London - unlike my first trip there, where I was interviewed for a job I didn't get (pshaw! who cares, anyway) and I broke one of my high heeled shoes in front of the prospective employer who didn't - I repeat - hire me for the job (and I'm glad! so there!)
Now I'm tapdancing all over the house, because yesterday I got my black boots, and they're so fab that I nearly walked out of the store wearing them (didn't you ever do that when you were a little kid and got cool shoes? come on, we know you did, 'cause I did) even though I was wearing calf-length capri pants and would have looked absolutely ridiculous walking out like that. But I didn't, so don't worry.
And I got my plane ticket to London! I'm leaving on October 6, and I'll be there for a week. Woo hoo! There's a long list of fun stuff I'm going to do, and I'm going to meet the Nutlog, who'll be the first friend I've met online that I'll meet in real life. Can you stand it? And here's hoping I don't break the heel of my shoe when I do. becky @ 9:19 AM | link

"Dance cards or 'Ballspenden' (which literally translates as 'ball-donates') have been a part of Viennese culture for more than a hundred years. Today, especially in Vienna, Ballspenden has come to represent the party favor or dance card that a lady used to record who she would dance with at a ball...The dance card, no matter when it was made generally consisted of a decorative case which opened to reveal a 'book' that listed the various dance titles and composers with a blank line which would be filled in with the name of the person with which the lady intended to dance...Attached somewhere to the case was a pencil with which to write a name. A decorative cord was attached to the case so that the entirety could be attached to the lady's ball gown."
