Brian was in the newspaper today. It's the story of a couple of Mac geeks on an airplane, instead of terrorists. Maybe it'll make you laugh like it did me. ;-)

I'm going to echo what Melissa said and try to resume regular posting this week. Considering I am one of the many people who were pissed off to see others resuming regular non-tragic-event posting last week, I feel like it's important to say I do recognize the need to return to "normal", whatever that is going to be now. I've mourned in virtual silence for several days... out of respect, and out of a genuine inability to express myself, and honestly, because anything else seemed trivial, like I mentioned before. I'm probably going to feel that way until every single missing person in the rubble is accounted for and perhaps, even long after that.

But now I find myself searching through the layers of pain, anger, and sadness trying to regain my sense of humor. I desperately need it to help me through this. So if the things I post in the next few days seem trivial, that's because they are. But I'm okay with that. If you get pissed like I did last week, I'm sorry - believe me, I know how you feel. Take a break from reading my blog (or the internet in general) until you feel better. It certainly helped me to do so.

I've found several of my interesting (and some are even funny!) cartoons that I wanted to share. Call it gallows humor, if you will. My favorites:

If you want to peruse all of them, go to politicalcartoons.com.

We just returned from my mom's, where we had a birthday party for my nephew. He turned three yesterday. He's pulling the ole "I-can-be-a-brat-for-today-because-it's-my-birthday" spiel. Every time he did something ornery or bad and got in trouble, he'd whine, "But.. but it's my burday!" Ha!

I took a bunch of pictures of the little terror and decided to share since he's such a ham:

  • Here he is opening our present to him; a Magna Doodle. He gets irritated because he can't tear open the wrapping paper very well, so he always says, "You open it, okay?" And we're like, "No, you open your own presents, because you're a big boy now."

  • Here is my mom showing Arden how to draw pictures on it. One cool thing about Arden is he doesn't race off to open the next present, he really wants to sit there and play with whatever you get him, and always forgets that he has more.

  • Here he is getting ready to blow out his three whole candles!

  • And what birthday collage wouldn't be complete without the requisite picture showing him with more cake on his face and hands than on the plate?

I wish that I could stop seeing Osama bin Laden's smirking face all over the news, talking about why he hates America and how he doesn't differentiate between U.S. military personnel and innocent civilians (apparently his reasoning behind this is that civilians pay taxes, which funds our government). I don't like to admit that I feel seething hatred towards another human being, but fuck it... I do.

Is anyone else questioning why we haven't brought this bastard down long before this? To think this entire thing could have been prevented if they'd only been able to locate him two or three years ago after the Embassy bombings.. or hell, even after the bombing of U.S.S. Cole, is almost too much to bear. The media keeps talking about how elusive he's been... but you know what? A CNN reporter was able to track him down a couple years ago and interview him in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. And if a reporter can do it, why the hell can't the FBI? Something is wrong with this picture, and I hate to question it right now, but I am angry about it.

It also scares the hell out of me that they keep finding more possible terrorists with big wads of cash and boxcutters who are still in the States. It makes me wonder if they were somehow thwarted in their efforts to hijack more than four planes, or if they are/were planning a secondary round of attacks. It's so hard to sleep at night.

Kellea had a link that I think needs to be shared...
They can't see why they are hated.

Not that I believe anything we've done justifies what happened here on Tuesday, but I think it's a perspective that needs to be read and understood, and addressed by our nation's leaders. And that's all that I'm willing to say publicly on the subject.

Brian and I turned the tv off around 3 p.m. yesterday and played card games instead - UNO and Skip Bo. I thought if I stopped watching the news in the evening it would prevent the nightmares. Fortunately it worked. Whenever I feel myself becoming overwhelmed with sadness I'm going to turn it off.

I did want to say thank you to those of you with the presence of mind to keep up with me and other friends. I think it says a lot about your character that you can offer love and support to others when you're feeling so much pain yourselves. Unfortunately I was unable to do that; I withdrew completely. I'm going to try to get back into the swing of things and visit all of my boards, weblogs, and answer my email this weekend.

Basically just try to get on with my regular life. My nephew's 3rd birthday is tomorrow and I'm going to pull myself together and pretend to be happy and let him have his special day. A lot of times, pretending to be okay allows you to feel okay, so that's the goal.

But I did want to say thank you to those of you who commented the past few days, it really helped to receive all of the virtual hugs.
