What a weekend, and what a day....
My religion class today was taken up with discussion of the tragedy. The mood was somewhat anti-muslim, and a little hostile. When one student asked why a religion would allow such actions, or encourage them, I was moved to speak.
Within the last two weeks religious extremists, in response to the desire of seven-year-old girls to WALK THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD, set off a bomb next to a school. This is the mentality we're dealing with.
These extremists were.... Protestant Christians in Northern Ireland.
The room got amazingly quiet at that point, and I, necessarily, reminded most in the room that the largest religious presence in the room was also Protestant Christian, Should we then ask why we did nothing to protect those kids? Why are we so evil as to allow it? It was obvious, at that point, that a couple of our fellow students were uncomfortable, and discussion afterwards revealed that they were Muslim, and afraid to talk for fear of reprisal.
I want to thank the people at Metafilter for enlightening me on the rules of Jihad, and that killing of innocents is murder no matter what. This is good to read, and to relate -- it shows that just having a Koran doesn't make you Muslim, nor does sitting in a Church make you Christian.
Best thing I've read otherwise:

Wish I'd been smart enough to make that one up!
