I saw the most touching movie this afternoon -- Babette's Feast, based on a story written by Isak Dinsesn (Karen Blixen) of Out of Africa fame. One one level it's a complex story about roads not taken, choices not made -- and opportunities that come again when you least expect them. On a story level, it's about a woman who flees France in 1871 for a Danish village, where she finds work as a household servant to two aging sisters. The sisters are leaders of a Puritanical sect established by their father many years before. Babette serves the sisters, much as the sister serve the poor and elderly of the village. She becomes a part of their lives and a part ofthe village. Fourteen years later, she is able to give the sisters and their sect a magnificent gift from her heart.

Went to the movie this afternoon -- Lost Souls. It was an interesting idea, and some of the shots were absolutely gorgeous. The director did a great job at conveying feeling with camera angles, lighting, etc. I thought Winona Ryder was much more suited for this part than she was for Autumn in New York.

Well things are moving right along ... The doctor has extended my leave until Monday, November 13. I start Cardiac Rehab this Friday. Mostly it will consist of supervised exercise, but apparently there will be other services, too. All designed to minimize my risk factors. Doesn't that sound fun?

Because I don't have enough health issues to worry about right now, the pain gods have blessed me with not only a slight cold, but a toothache as well!

Well, I'm still alive, and I'm gonna be for a while longer ... Went to the doctor this afternoon. I'm not doing as well as I expected to be, but she seems fine with my progress. The ick in my leg is normal, or at least, "to be expected." I'm not going back to work on Monday, as originally planned. We're not sure when I'll go back. She's checking in to cardiac rehab for me, and has scheduled a stress test in December.

All of that aside, my poor little mind is still reeling with the truth -- I am 36 years old and I just had a serious heart attack.

Wow ...

I have a wonderful mother-in-law. Really, no jokes here. She's taking me to the cardiologist, then out for lunch. I've been released to drive, so I could go by myself, but she didn't want me to (hubby is at work). She's the best!

I leave for the doctor in just a few minutes ... I'm very anxious. I think I'm doing okay, and I'm looking forward to having her do something about my leg, but I'm also very scared about how this is going to really impact the rest of my life. I'm afraid to eat, I don't sleep well, I'm afraid to go back to work.

Depression, anyone?

I asked a social worker about healing my heart and mending my soul ... I've no real idea how to go about this. She says:
My response to your inquiry is brief. After years (abt.30) of working on myself, consciously, working, I mean to say. The key to healing is honesty. Terrible, get down, dirty honesty, first with the self and second with at least one other person. Dishonesty or deniel is at the center of the human problem. We need to be honest about the good traits and the bad traits we have.
So, here's the thing ... How do I accomplish that kind of honesty? Not just with another person, but with myself? I suspect that if being honest with myself were easily accomplished, I wouldn't be in the emotional predicament I now find myself. I don't just mean objectivity -- everyone probably has a problem with that from time to time -- but real honesty. Seeing a relationship for what it is, accepting my role in the traumas of my life, accepting my strengths as well as my weaknesses ... All easier said than done.

I stopped by work this afternoon to pick up a birthday present for hubby and to drop off paperwork for my leave of absence. It was good to see some of those folks! I was surprised at the number of people who didn't know I was off work -- or why -- until I told them. Just goes to show my place in the food chain!

I can't believe how long it's been since I've posted ... I LOVE my blog! As I mentioned in my last post ... life is crazy. Hmmm, crazy isn't exactly the word. Life is unbelievable ...

Two weeks ago (even as I type) I had a heart attack. It wasn't a big one, but I'm only 36 years old! That makes it pretty serious, I guess. On Thursday, October 12, I had an angioplasty (balloon surgery) to relieve a 100% blockage, and a stint was inserted at that time to keep the artery open. My body still hurts, but my psyche hurts more! I have a broken heart and a wounded spirit. They have to heal together, or not at all ...
