Just returned from the MacDowell Colony---

Squirrels taste better when they are not cooked very long.

Another day -- It has been difficult finding (or making?) the time to blog... Things are going very well -- Unfortunately, I can't mention some exciting news here, because it's not "official" yet -- However, if the "gig" comes through, I may just move my office up to cloud 9 ---

The festival is shaping up-- Everyone is excited about the calibur of music submitted.

Just got back from SEAMUS -- a GREAT performance by the flute player (had Stationary Fronts for amplified flute and tape played). The flute player was an amazing player. Unfortunately, the tape part was not presented very well. In addition to the crappy speakers they had, I think that the levels they called up on the digi mixer was for another piece. The tape part simply didn't fill the hall like it did in rehearsal -- oh well. Regardless, the flutist really kicked a fantastic performance.

Just finished the parts for Perspectives. I spent my entire life this past week trying to get them done. I am very happy with the outcome. They look great!

I'm sitting in front of the computer at school doing parts for Perspectives. Looking forward to having them done so I can get back to composing. The SCI conference really has me stirred.

I think I'll take my pimp ring to the next SCI conference -- that way, I'll be ready to do some bitch slapping.

Just got back from the SCI Region 5 Conference at Ball State University. Stationary Fronts was performed by one of the faculty. It wasn't the best performance in terms of accuracy, but the flutist really had an amazing technique! The piece is only 6 minutes long, but seems to work very well. It was great to hear it in another environment.

It would have been more successful at the conference if it would have been programmed differently. It was the shortest piece for the entire conference. Would have been a welcomed relief on one of the 3 hour concerts! The conference was very difficult for the audience. There was a 2.5 hour concert on Thursday night. Nothing all day Friday, until 5pm. The 5pm concert was 3 hours long, and then another 3 hour concert at 8pm. Six straight hours of new music is tough. Saturday started off with an 11am concert (again 2.5 hours), then a 1.5 hour concert at 2pm, and a 3 hour concert at 3:30pm! The final concert was really the best concert -- only 2 hours.

Before I start to feel like a whimp (I've only talked about length), each concert, with the exception of the last, had at least 2 really crappy, shapeless, boring pieces. Hey! It's my Blog, and I'll damn well make these judgements here. I learned a few things: Terraced dynamics are back in vogue, contrast is not a redeeming quality, program notes should speak for the music, and it's okay to write a big pile of steamy shit as long as your bio is impressive.

But again, there was also some very good music on the festival. I was very impressed with several of the pieces. Unfortunately, it seemed that some selections must have been politically motivated --

JUST ONE OF THOSE WEEKS!

I've been wanting to update this "blog" for a few days now, but everytime I start to, I get distracted. Now that I have made the time to write, I really don't have much to say...Well, I'm getting real sick of the weather. I'm ready for some warmer weather.
