John Dvorak of PC Magazine has historically been a tenacious critic of the Mac and Apple. Yet, here he is putting his money on Mac OS X over Windows XP. Like me, he's taking the long view on Apple and forsees changes in the company that provides Apple with its processors. And it won't be Intel...

Looking at the MacOSX Dock is a much more lucid argument for changes to the Dock than Bruce Tognazinni's Top 10 Reasons the Apple Dock Sucks. Bruce gives you the impression he's just mad at Steve Jobs for not hiring him back to work on the Mac GUI. Liquid.org makes some very pointed remarks about icons in Mac OSX, some of which I would expect to eventually be integrated into the OS at some point down the road since they are much more useful than the large, photographic standard OS X icons.

MacWorld announcements: new G4s, iTunes, iDVD, PowerBook G4 Titanium.
Gotta get iTunes. Supplants SoundJam for me. I suspect that there is no way to make skins for this thing, but that never was a big draw for me in an MP3 player. iDVD seems like a waste of time since the only machine capable of using it is the high end G4 PowerMac (which won't ship until next quarter.) But the PowerBook G4 is a winner, the "must have" product announcement. I think Apple learned its lesson with the Cube, making the PB G4 different enough from the current PB line so as not to compete with it. If I had the cash...

Glad to see that Steve considers the Mac the "digital hub" for all media, but I wish he'd focus on making some of the spokes, too. I'd love to have an Apple-branded PDA or MP3 player. Maybe these consumer media apps are just the ground work for future expansion in hardware areas.

Mac OS X will ship March 24th at a cost of $129.00. This seems a bit high and a bit late, but based on the features shown in today's keynote it's gonna rock.

I re-created this page as a Blog so I could keep it more up-to-date. All the old article links are below, currently, and unfortunately, without the actual links. I will rectify this eventually. More Apple news to come, especially with Steve's keynote tomorrow in SanFran.

Ars Technica - 05/25/00
MacOS X DP4
Once again, Ars Techinca comes through with the best report on the latest developers' release of MacOS X. The article goes into a great deal of detail on the low level architecture of applications and files, called "Bundles." Reviews changes to the Dock and Auqua and also describes Quartz on a technical level, dispelling the rumor that all screen graphics will be drawn with vectors.

Mac OS X beta may reach WWDC
Article focuses on changes that have been implmented since the release of DP4 in February. Primarily these are interface issues with Aqua (modifications to make the Dock better) and beefing up services like printing. The biggest news is that MacOS X printing services will not support legacy output connections such as serial, SCSI, etc. This means my Beige G3 and Wallstreet G3 Powerbook won't be getting MacOSX.

MacOS X DP3: Trial By Water
Another excellent, detailed and long overview of the latest developers' release of MacOS X. The article highlights both the underpinning system strucutre of the new OS as well as the differences between the "Classic" Mac OS and the new UNIX-derived flavor. Overall, very positive article on the system, not too favorable (but even-handed) on the GUI, "Aqua."

Mac OS X DP2: A preview
A excellent and highly detailed overview of the underpinnings of Mac OS X, set to be released in mid-2000. This review is by a PC-centered site and is extremely fair-handed. Some questions about the GUI were answered in Steve Jobs' recent MacWorld SanFran keynote.
