If we're quiet, it's because we're... busy. So much stuff coming up!

Seven (ten, including time for a business plan and sundry organizational issues) months in, but it feels in some ways like we're just starting now.

Well, that's out of the way. For those of you who didn't get the memo, public views of bookmarks, wishlist, and notepad; XML feeds of these public views, a plug-in architecture to hook directly into the Deepleap platform, and even discussion boards for our active user and developer community.

Oh, yeah. We rock.

There are some seriously cool implications to the fact that we're publishing the bookmark, wishlist, and even the notepad feed as XML. Think about it...

Something I discovered as a I was weeding out a lot of bad email addresses from the Deepleap mailing list -- a lot of fake email addresses start with lsk or lks. why is that? what is it that motivates people to type those three letters in those orders? Something to do with standard hand position over the keyboard?

Also, sfd. Let's not forget sfd.

It's a funny thing, trying to run a business that means something, personally and professionally, to you and others. I have a lot of admiration for people who can hold fast to their own belief system, in the face of a whole industry designed to get you to abandon just that.

Believe me, it's not that easy. Here's the thing: everybody wants you to make money. Now, before you come a-knockin' -- yes, that's the goal of a company. And it's a good goal for a company to have. :) But that doesn't mean it has to be the only goal. Companies don't have to be fully evil and 100% corporate. Companies don't have to be relentless in their self-mythologizing. Companies don't have to not care.

So, yeah, money. But when you look past just that, what do you see? What's the point, the real point? Money is a means, not an end. What's the end?

What's the goal?

We're learning a lot as we try to navigate these waters. We've had a few arguments. :) And I've learned, personally (and professionally), that I don't much like people who can only focus on one side of this issue -- the money, or the absolute certainty that it cannot be had or made use of without some sort of taint and corruption -- because they don't teach me anything of value. Value being defined as something that I can use, in a real way, with which I can make a difference.

In short: Not all companies are bad. Some can take that cash and do some Very Good Things. We're trying to be one of them. And the great thing is, if we're not, you can tell us what we need to do to get there. God bless interactivity.

According to Mr. Brown, my new haircut has brought me "fully into the new millenium." Which confuses me, because it's the same haircut I had for a while last year, which was definitely not a part of the new millenium, but whatever. Arguably we haven't even made it into the new millenium yet, but I don't really want to get involved in that debate, either.

How does this relate? Well, he says, I am now officially "a CEO for the new millenium."

Woohoo. Take that, M&M's.

Because I've been busy, that's why.

I don't mean to harp unfairly on PCs (he said, after 20 minutes of fighting with his Mac.) At some point, all computers are stupid. Some are just stupider than others.

I fixed a networking problem with the new office PC today. Dell had done something bizarre, somewhere, and we had to completely wipe the drive and reinstall Windows, but it works now.

PCs are stupid, and the amount of work you have to put into them when they break is just ridiculous. I mean, I don't mind using them, as a general rule, but it amazes me that people will put up with all the hoops they make you jump through just to get them to the point where you can use them.

We're a very cross-platform office, in case you were wondering. I always find one-OS offices so tacky, don't you?
