Back On Track
I like my job, but it's always an uphill struggle. It seems like on a daily basis, there's a status meeting between everyone except me to see how they can make me try to hate my job, or at least how to make it less easy to perform.
We recently hired a new employee, and there are a couple of significant facts that accompany that. Number one, she's the first female in the office. Number two, she's the manufacturing manager. I would say the "new" manufacturing manager, but there never was an old one. So, this is a completely new position, and a completely new employee, and since the position has never had a definition, and she has absolutely no experience in manufacturing, the coming months are going to be about as fun as dry-humping sand paper.
See, I've been here for less than two years, but I'm the answer guy. Anybody has a question, they come ask me. Even the owner asks me questions about policies and procedures that I never wrote. I guess I just have this propensity to *know* stuff.
The problem is that everything here gets half an effort, aside from the actual work being done. We put full effort into our products. However, everything else seems to suck. We've got a $20,000 inventory tracking and shop control system that has gone largely unutilized for a year. We've got 6 computers all running different versions of Windows hooked to a Linux network server, yet no one knows the first fucking thing about Linux, or system administrating. I've got NT experience, but for some reason everyone seems hesitant to change over.
And now the latest saga, the phone system. We've got 4 phones that are all the same brand and model, and they've got paging, 4 lines, yadda yadda stuff. So when it comes time to get the new girl a phone, do you think we'd go and get a 5th phone that was exactly the same as the rest? No! Of course not! So now we have this odd-ball phone that is totally incompatible with the others, and thus we no longer have paging, the phones no longer recognize that a call on hold has been answered so you get those annoying fucking half-rings reminding you that you placed a call on hold and haven't picked it back up yet, even though someone *has* already picked it up... you see where I'm going.
It's just like making a great, beautiful dinner for your family and then stirring the mashed potatoes with your dick... you just have to ask, why?
