I was walking down the street before a meeting this morning and a fire fighter happened to be walking near me going to get a cup of coffee. I stopped and thanked him for his service and willingness to give his life if necessary for people he didn't have any connection to. He just replied with a smile, "We all do what we can, and this is how I give back to a society which has given me so much." I thanked him again and walked away. Because of people like this, I have hope. +link+ 11:07 AM Comments [0]
A man giving blood was asked by a reporter, "What else are you going to do to help the country in the face of this tragedy?" The man replied, "I'm waiting for my President to tell me what line to get into next, because I'll be there." These types of reactions are why this country is so great -- why the people who are my fellow citizens are so amazing, and so worth fighting for. People grieve for the vicitims, but at the same time are selflessly helping those who must deal with the aftermath.
As I write this, two C-130 military cargo planes are flying overhead. +link+ 10:39 AM Comments [0]

Throughout any future events, do not forget the selfless heroes and many unfortunate victims. All we can do is pray, hold on to our hope, and refuse to give up. +link+ 11:55 PM Comments [0]

"These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation."

Milwaukee ranks #10 in the "Hot Jobs/Cool Communities" survey (need Acrobat to view), which ranks the best places to live and work for people under 40. +link+ 09:53 PM Comments [0]
It's going to be a long first couple days of the week. I will be in Chicago tomorrow during the day for work, then I have to return to Milwaukee to pick up Chris and we are heading to Madison at night for a Douglas Coupland reading. Then back to Milwaukee to sleep, and finally back to Chicago Tuesday for work again. Luckily life will quickly calm down after Tuesday and I'll be able to settle in again in Milwaukee for a while. +link+ 09:49 PM Comments [0]
I guess being engaged requires me to attend a bridal show and pretend that I enjoy it. Maybe we'll win the grand raffle prize which, with my luck, will probably be a dress or something. +link+ 10:48 AM Comments [3]
Interesting. A bill in the U.S. House of Representatives has been proposed to nullify the 16th Amendment, which gives Congress the right to tax individual and corporate incomes. +link+ 12:13 AM Comments [0]

I have always been interested in early American politics and the political theories that formed the basis of the United States government. This afternoon I started reading Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis (yes, the historian with a bit of scandal surrounding him). It is not an all-encompassing narritive about the framers of the Constitution, but looks at six significant events that influenced the forming of the United States: the duel between Burr and Hamilton; the secret dinner between Hamilton, Madison, and Jefferson which determined the physical location of the nation's capital; Franklin's petition to end slavery; Washington's farewell address and advice to future leaders; and Adams' term as successor to Washington. As I read through it, I may post my thoughts. +link+ 07:29 PM Comments [0]
Our last-minute plans to go camping this weekend were spoiled by mother nature. According to the expert weather people at weather.com, we would have had about 4 consecutive hours without thunderstorms. +link+ 04:02 PM Comments [0]
