Holy crap! We're going to have a baby!
I'm starting this little page for the two us us (Amy and I) and our families

need to be documented, this is it... and our wedding of course.
Well, here's to what lies ahead, what lies behind and (god bless) the

I went to the last doctor's appointment today! One more day until baby!
Here's the update: I am dilated between 1 and 1 1/2 cm and my cervix is really "soft" but still "long". That means that it is definitely getting ready and changing but it is not that different than before. The doctor stripped my membranes again and tickled the baby's head again too. That has brought on some cramping and mild contractions but so far nothing more than that. We took one last look at the baby with an ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid levels and everything looks great. The baby's head was too low in my pelvis (that's a good thing) to take an accurate measurement so there is no new guess on weight for the baby. I'm guessing 27 pounds. Give or take 20. I didn't even bother asking the doctor to try and check the gender again. What's the point, right? The best part of the appointment was the part that is usually the worst part... the weigh-in. I lost four pounds!! Yeah! That's 4 pounds less to lose after the baby comes!
Here's the plan: Tomorrow I am calling the hospital at around noon to make sure that they aren't too busy. I will plan on heading down there at around 1:00 pm. I'll get all checked in and hooked up to a bunch of machines and at about 3:00 pm my doctor will administer the Cervadil stuff to start me dilating more. It will stay in for 12 hours and at about 3:00 am they will start me on Pitocin to get the contractions going. My doctor anticipates that the baby will arrive in the afternoon or early evening on Thursday. Of course, there are things that could change that. It is possible that I could still go into labor today :-) Ha HA Ha or I could go into labor after they give me the Cervadil and before they give me the Pitocin or I could react strongly to the Pitocin and labor more quickly than anticipated. So, let's just assume that it will be Thursday evening...
I will be at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital on the second floor in Labor and Delivery. Their entrance is on Welch Rd and the building is connected to Stanford Hospital so hopefully anyone who wants to be there will be able to find the right area. Shortly after delivery I will be moved into Maternity also on the second floor and I plan on having the baby in the room with me all the time. Everyone is welcome to be at the hospital whenever they want for however long they want but during the birth it is just Cale and I in the room (and maybe the doctor and nurses!). If I am tired or in pain I will tell you to leave. Otherwise, feel free to visit.
My sister Heather is in charge of making the preliminary phone calls for us and some of the people she is calling will be calling other people. There are also people that Cale will wait to call until the baby arrives. The preliminary list contains immediate family members, Michelle and Bill, Dave and Cindy, Steff and Tony, James and Amanda and Palo Alto Communications (my 911 coworkers).
If anyone still has questions, call me at home today or tomorrow morning. After that I will be busy getting ready to have a baby!!! At last the light at the end of the tunnel is shining brightly...

Here's a thought... If the baby is born to day the birthdate would be 911. Now, that would be pretty cool.

Thursday we had a little excitement... One of my pregnancy side effects has been difficulty breathing. On Thursday it was especially bad and I had a couple of hot flashes and saw stars a couple of times. These can be signs of preeclampsia so I called my doctor to let her know. She told me to go to the hospital for some tests right away. That was a little scary... I got ahold of Cale and since he was at work we decided to meet at the hospital to save transportation time. After struggling to find parking spaces we made our way to Labor and Delivery. My doctor had called ahead so they were expecting me. They took blood and urine and then had me lay on a table. They hooked me up to a bunch of machines and strapped elastic belts around my belly to monitor my blood pressure, any contractions and the heart rates and oxygen saturation rates of the baby and I. Within minutes everything appeared to be normal. The baby was doing great - getting plenty of oxygen with a strong and steady heartbeat. I was having mild contractions every 8-9 minutes while we were there too. I think laying down and knowing that the baby was doing well made me feel better. My breathing became a lot easier and after monitoring us for a couple of hours they sent us home. My doctor and the nurse that took care of us agreed that I had probably gotten a little overheated, had been moving around too much and that I am very full of baby which makes my lungs a little crowded. They also made predictions on when we would be back to deliver the baby but so far neither of them was right. My contractions of course subsided later in the evening only to reappear today for couple of hours. All these false starts are taking a toll on me. I know we only have at most a few more days, but the waiting seems to get harder every day. Maybe tomorrow will be the day...

Well, it's our due date!!
Apparently the baby doesn't understand this concept. We went back to the doctor today and not much has changed. I am still 1 cm dilated and measuring at 42 weeks. I did lose one pound though which is another sign of impending labor. The doctor poked around in there and even tickled the baby's head a couple of times. That may help me go into labor but with my luck it will have no effect. We shall see...
We have one last appointment scheduled with her on Tuesday the 11th as long as I'm still pregnant then. If there haven't been significant changes by then we will go to our induction plan. We are scheduled to go to the hospital on Wednesday the 12th after dinner and check in. They would then attach some little strip thingy to my cervix with time release chemicals that would (hopefully) dilate me over night. Then in the morning they would start me on Pitocin (if I haven't gone into labor on my own) to get the contractions started. Then, hopefully by afternoon or evening, I would finally deliver this baby.
We are ALL hoping that the baby will show up before any of that stuff is necessary. I am more than a little impatient these days and I am usually pretty irritated with everything. Cale and I are trying to just get throught the next week (or less) without totally losing it. It isn't very easy for either one of us right now. I know it will all be over soon but it seems like it is taking forever. I am not only looking forward to finally seeing and holding and kissing and cuddling this little one but also the little things like being able to wear shoes that tie, see my feet, take a hot bath and as crazy as it sounds I am even looking forward to working out. I have been fantasizing about fitting into non maternity clothes again one day. I even bought some goal pants. When I fit into them I will definitely celebrate.
Will update again as soon as something happens...

We went back to the doctor on Thursday. Not much has changed. On Tuesday I had two more bonafide contractions, but only two. I'm dilated to 1 cm now and my belly is measuring at 42 weeks which is two weeks overdue! No wonder none of my clothes fit anymore. The doctor said that we might have a very exciting and busy weekend, but as of yet, no baby. She also said that if we make it to our next appointment (on Wednesday the 5th) without having the baby we can pick out the day to induce. Probably the 12th. It will only be sooner if she lets me pick an earlier date, like the 6th. She did try to help it along by "stripping my membranes". For those of you that are a little squeamish or just don't need the description, skip to the next paragraph. For those of you that are interested, I will explain the procedure. Basically, the doctor runs her finger around the inside edge of my cervix and tries to detach or strip the stringy membranes that hold the bag of waters to the cervix. This is known to help get things changing and sometimes to start contractions. As luck would have it, nothing has happened.
We have been doing a lot of walking and have tried to induce on our own by trying all the recommendations and old wives tales, but to no avail. We are hoping now for a Labor Day baby. Or even a September 4th baby and she can share her birthday with Auntie Heather. I'm free on the 5th too. It seems like days are lasting a lot longer now. I know that it can't be more than a week and a half now but it seems like it has taken forever to get here. Cale's brother Colin was visiting for the weekend and he was a little sad to have not been able to meet the little one. He also said that he had a nightmare that Cale wasn't around and he had to take me to the hospital and everything. That idea was a little scary for him... Well, unless something happens, I'll update again after our next appointment.

One week left !! I, of course, am hoping for less than that but these days I'll take what I can get. I got a little excited yesterday because I had one real bonafide contraction. Only one though. At least I know what I am in for...
For those of you that don't live in the area, we are having another little heat wave. I have been pretty uncomfortable anyway lately and the heat is just a bonus. I heard on the news that it is supposed to start cooling off now though. My only relief has been my new love, lime flavored popsicles. We made sure that we have some ready to take to the hospital too.
I could not possibly be more ready to have this baby. I have been going crazy. Cale found me standing in the doorway to the baby's room the other day just staring at everything. He said "There is nothing left to do in there." I said "There must be something." Maybe I could refold the clothes. Again. I even made little favors for the first 30 visitors at the hospital. Tell me that isn't a little weird. I really need to have this baby soon. On top of all that, I have very few clothes left that fit. None of which are shorts, which is great during this time of year. Anyway, enough complaining... I am just very very anxious. And excited. And freaked out. And Ready!
We go back to the doc on Thursday... will write more then...
