I just want to follow this up with: No, I am not some inhumane blood-thirsty animal. No, I am not "just out for revenge". Or saying anythign out of "fear and anger". I realy feel that a military response is the right thing. If this makes me a cretin so be it. I'm tired of fighting with people about it, and I'm going to be off-line for a few days just so that I don't have to see it. Because this fluffy bunny shit is pissing me off. I am more afraid of a war than any of them. I have a cousin in the navy. I am worried sick about him. Does this change my oppinion? no. not at all. I'd also like to say that I'm sorry if I've offended anyone at LRB. If you want to delete either of my posts on the subject, please do. David, if you'd like to email me and tell me I'm out, go right ahead. I've delt with enough for this week. I've just lost three friends because we have a difference in oppinion? Fuck this.
I happen to believe that forgiveness should be given to those who ask for it. Forgiveness and repentance to me mean an awareness and understanding that some ill was done and sincere attempts will be made to prevent similar things from occuring by a change in behavior and attitude. Many women fall into the trap -as I see it- of "forgiving" their husbands for fooling around even though he is going to do it again and again in spite of his possibly having asked for forgiveness each of the ten or more times he did it. Many women refuse to even hold the guy accountable and ask for an apology and instead keep saying "I forgive him" as if that makes them a superior person and everything is okay. I also believe that many of these people now filling the churches are anticipating Armageddon (sp?) and rushing to make sure God remembers who they are when the time comes. There are some people who have probably had their faith reaffirmed -and many more had theirs shaken- but I think there are an awful lot of "foul-weather friends". We finally had to start an offshoot of the designers list I'm on since things were getting so heated. Some people wanted to talk about design, some wanted to talk about the disaster and some wanted to prosletize and we just couldn't all get along. There has been some discussion on that list and other places saying that if we had more female leaders we wouldn't be experiencing the "testosterone surge" we are now. But, you know, it's not like the female leaders have been timid churchmice who were afraid of their own shadow. If Margaret Thatcher were still in office, she would have started the bombing without us. Benzhair Bhutto, Golda Meir, Indira Ghandi were all strong tough women who led their country in battle. To imply that women could or should encourage cheek-turning is obviously wrong. Or maybe I'm so far into menopause that my testosterone level is already off. The problem with only punishing bin Laden, or whomever turns out to be guilty, is that especially if it is him he will have such "clean" records it would be tough to pin things on him in a War Trial. His couriers and other workers take a vow of silence or death when they go to work for him. And it isn't as if he has phones we can tap like John Gotti did. War is the only way. Unless GW does something about this, and I mean something substantive and punitive, he will not be re-elected and we will see another Democrat in the White House in 2004. And I'll switch parties and vote for them, too. I want someone's a** to pay for this. It's probably not bin Laden since that would be the most obvious suspect. Optimism, whether shameless or not, aside there is going to be a war, my friends. May God have mercy on us all. And may future generations forgive us either way. And in that wish I am most sincere.
I've noticed that these events have spurred everyone on to praying and singing hymns. And though my timing may be terrible, I can't help but wonder if this "disaster-based faith" of seeking God only when the bad things happen is really a genuine one. I think that if Americans can truly acknowledge and embrace God in the way that He asks us to do, then Americans would have absolutely no problem with saying to the guily party with all sincerity, "In the name of Jesus Christ, we forgive you." Of course, to think that such would happen is nothing but shameless optimism and saccharine naïvitée. Forgiveness is one of the central tenets of Christianity, and if all those who unabashedly sing "God Bless America" truly mean it, then this racism, this seething hate and anger, all the junk and crap that has been surfacing from these incidents, would all be so terribly marginalized that the problems that Jish experienced wouldn't happen.
My oppinion is this: War is the right thing. It's the only thing these assholes are going to listen to. We can't just "turn the other cheek" in this situation, or it will just happen again and again and again. This isn't highschool, this is the fate of the planet. And it scares the living fuck out of me. I'll be real honest and say that yes, I agree we should go to war, but god-damnit, I am scared. And I'm not ashamed to say it. Looking at things at home right now: The Afgahn-Americans have become the black people. There are too many people threatening them just because of what they look like. There was a time when this happened to black people, and now it happens to others. For different reasons, yes. But it is still racism. And it's not right. And yes, I'm a white female, but that doesn't mean that if there's a man who looks like he's from Afganistan standing behind me at the ATM that I am scared. He is a human, and that is all I know. He was not in any of those planes. Wake up, America. I know you're scared, but don't blame it on the inocents, ok? My love to Jish and anyone else who has had to put up with the recent wave of racism. Jish is Canadian for god-sakes! (a bit of a strange canadian, granted, but canadians are strange anyway) To be perfectly honest, there is a part of me that says we should just destroy every country that disagrees with us. But that is my anger, and my fear speaking. We need justice. But destroying a dozen or more countries is not going to get us that justice. But taking most of the UN and going to war against terrorists and a country that harbors them (my definition of harboring: knowing they're in the country and not turning them over when asked), that will bring us justice. However, I'm scared shitless. I am scared of everything right now. I am scared, and I am depressed, and I'm feeling hopeless and alone. And that is why neither of my blogs have realy been updated and I haven't been posting on message boards, and I haven't been blogging here. Because, I don't know any more. I just don't know.
What a fascinating idea. As I watch each link sketched out, I can't help but stare, mesmerized. (And of course, I'm linking to it so as to add our dot.)
hush my darling, be still my darling, the lion's on the phone ...
