Navajo 'Code Talkers' Honored for Wartime Service The U.S. Marine Corps, anxious to find a means of quick and secure communications, recruited the first 29 code talkers in May of 1942 to develop a code in their complex language. The Japanese never succeeded in breaking the code.

Bruce Schneier on Dmitry Sklyarov Arrest On Monday in Las Vegas, the FBI arrested a Russian computer security researcher, because he presented a paper on the strengths and weaknesses of software used to protect electronic books. Because of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which makes publishing critical research on this technology more serious than publishing nuclear weapon design information, Dmitry Sklyarov (age 27) landed in jail. Just how did the United States of America end up with a law protecting the entertainment industry at the expense of freedom of speech?

InternetNews - Web Developer News -- Sun Responds to Microsoft's Removal of JVM in XP . "On the one hand, you could say, 'gee, Microsoft is attempting to keep people from using Java on Windows and this is sort of an exclusionary tactic.' I think that's probably not true. Because of the settlement agreement with Sun, they can't ship current or new versions of Java. If my choices were to ship nothing or an old version, I would ship nothing."

Mobile phones may foil stealth bombers - smh.com.au - World America's multi-billion-dollar stealth bombers could be rendered obsolete by a British invention that uses existing mobile telephone masts to detect and track aircraft that were previously invisible to radar.

US stealth fighters and bombers such as the F117, B1 and B2 played key roles in the Gulf and Kosovan wars as they are almost impossible to detect using conventional radar.

The Chip Collection - Chip Art Page 1, Smithsonian Institution These chip art images were made visible through lapping techniques, magnification and Polaroid capturing. Typically chips have a unique "signature" which we have come to recognize and expect to be logic, memory, gates, etc. However, these signatures are the designer's, the engineer's and in some cases a company logo.
They have left their mark in and for history. The chip collection is complemented with imagination which takes no space on a shelf, requires no conservation and cannot typically be exhibited.

Yahoo - The Daily Interview: The Market Has Gotten Ahead of Itself What we need is the consumer to spend more. But when you look at the profile of the consumer and consumer spending, retailers are reporting OK numbers. But these are reduced numbers. Now, we have the lowest savings rate, the highest debt-to-income level we've ever had and consumers are concerned about jobs now because of the layoffs we've seen and will continue to see. So I'm not willing to bet on that horse, either. There's not a catalyst to bring us out of this.

The Times It has, however, prompted fears among some scientists that it could bring closer the production line “hatcheries” envisioned by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World, and make IVF the normal means of human reproduction.
American researchers have already built several prototype chips, which can carry out a single stage of IVF, such as the fertilisation of an egg, though not all the steps at once.

BBC News | BUSINESS | Danger ahead warns Greenspan The markets now are confused, you got the fear of recession creating bearish sentiment, and the rate cuts creating bullishness. Its a fight between the bulls and the bears. With technology the companies are going to clean up their act and recover quickly. My prediction: it is going to be a slow summer with a stalemate in stocks till September, then the big boys are going to start buying enthusiastically. Watch for a bull run at year end.

Raging Bull JOKES Post #11551

A man was working on his motorcycle on his patio and his wife was in the kitchen. The man was racing the engine on the motorcycle when it accidentally slipped into gear. The man, still holding onto the handlebars, was dragged through the glass patio doors and along with the motorcycle dumped onto the floor inside the house.

The wife, hearing the crash, ran into the dining room and found her husband lying on the floor, cut and bleeding, the motorcycle lying next to him, and the shattered patio door. The wife ran to the phone and summoned the
ambulance.

Because they lived on a fairly large hill, the wife went down the several flights of stairs to the street to escort the paramedics to her husband.

After the ambulance arrived and transported the man to the hospital, the wife up righted the motorcycle and pushed it outside. Seeing that gas was spilled on the floor, the wife got some paper towels, blotted up the gasoline. and threw the towels in the toilet.

The man was treated and released to come home. Upon arriving home, he looked at the shattered patio door and the damage done to his motorcycle He became despondent, went to the bathroom, sat down on the toilet and smoked a
cigarette. After finishing the cigarette, he flipped it between his legs into the toilet bowl while seated.

The wife, who was in the kitchen, heard the loud explosion and her husband screaming. She ran into the bathroom and found her husband lying on the floor. His trousers had been blown away and he was suffering burns on the buttocks, the back of his legs, and his groin.

The wife again ran to the phone to call the ambulance. The very same paramedic crew was dispatched and the wife met them at the street. The paramedics loaded the husband on to the stretcher and began carrying him to
the street.

While they were going down the stairs to the street accompanied by the wife, one of the paramedics asked the wife how the husband had burned himself. She told them and the paramedics started laughing so hard, one of them slipped and tipped the stretcher, dumping the husband out. He fell down the remaining stairs and broke his arm.

BW Online | April 26, 2001 | Greenspan's Preoccupation with Profits By aggressively cutting rates, Greenspan is betting that the New Economy is alive and kicking and can insulate the U.S. against any inflation outbreak.
