This is a dreadful and mindboggling situation. Words fail.

9:31 AM  Not too many movies this weekend: I tried to watch South Pacific, but gave up early on -- for a while I thought I had a thing against musicals (I still don't get why people like West Side Story so much, for example), but I have enjoyed a few in the past: On the Town and Singin' in the Rain are wonderful, and I even dig An American in Paris despite the interminable dancing at the end. So maybe it's just those Rodgers/Hammerstein ones.

I also watched 42nd Street, which is a musical as well (and that "Shuffle Off to Buffalo" song? That's one rocking song), I suppose. It's pretty corny but pretty wonderful. And the coreography at the end is hallucinatory. Also: My Man Godfrey: funny! Very funny.

Watched bits of the awful MTV Video Music Awards -- mostly because I was wanted to see Tenacious D and Outkast. The Michael Jackson thing at the VMAs was bizarre, but apparently his tribute concert was even more so.

Also watched the first episode of Lost and liked it tons.

By almost any measure, more people are fighting more frequently in more parts of Colombia than at any point in the four-decade conflict.

9:36 AM  Finally caught an episode of Samurai Jack two days ago. Oh, man, did that rock -- Adult Swim, alas, is a mixed bag: some of the shows, like Home Movies and The Brak Show, are terrific, while others feel a little forced.

Regardless, it's nice to see new episodes of Space Ghost.
