Exhausting and Exhilirating

Lots of work today. Lots and lots and lots. Trying to gather my thoughts about the Graduate Student Health Insurance plan offered by the NAGPS and the teaching for graduate students proposal so I could present them in a (somewhat) organized fashion to the Grad Ed committee today. (It went pretty well. Well received, but need to do more work, of course.) And trying to work on the Women in Neuroscience website, which should be live soon, and then I can direct you to that. And trying to help design a new website for a new international laser society (that is not at all live yet and I can't direct you to). And trying to treat my rats and quantify my immuno and remember where I parked my car.

But it's all good work, and I feel very good about it, and I'm happy. Good to be manic again.

And in the back of my mind all day, whenever I walk back into the room, is: has there been any new news? I've never prayed for an air pocket before. But I really want one now.

New Additions

I've (finally) uploaded some of the photos from recent activities (the rafting trip in August and the adoption of the new kitten). Unfortunately, the scanner here is not functioning today, so I'll either have to scan the rest in at home or wait until I figure out what the problem is...

I also found this flash page written by Halcyon, re the terrorist attack. Go look. It's good.

OK. Back to work. I was supposed to be done with my immuno analysis by Friday. And there are still 9 zip disks full of images that need to be analyzed. I don't think anyone will really press me on why they're not done yet, though.

Thinking Nothing

We hiked up Sugarloaf mountain this morning, because kickboxing was canceled. At the top, we perched on a couple of rocks and just looked across Maryland. From there, you can see a whole lot of Maryland. A mountain range off in the distance, the Potomac River (although I didn't see the river myself; that would have involved leaning pretty far over the rocks and I'm afraid of heights today), farms, and blue sky. We were so high, we looked down at the circling hawks.

We just sat there, looking at the greens and browns and blues. So quiet except for the occasional bird (and West Nile infected crow) and the kids rappelling off the nearby rocks.

And after a while of just sitting there, Ashley turned and asked, "What are you thinking?"

"Nothing"

She smiled. "It's nice, isn't it?"

Yep, it is nice.

Still Looking For A Way To Help Out?

Well, this came in my email box today. If you're in the DC area, read on (of course, this would probably work in the New York area as well):

Salvation Army has announced they need food donations for the volunteers at the Pentagon. They are accepting the donations at

The Salvation Army Headquarters
518 South Glebe Road
Arlington, VA

They are asking for:
muffins
fruit
water
lunch bags
loaves of bread
luncheon meat

Additional Non-food items:
Foot powder
Underwear (briefs) all sizes
Socks

Of course, I had to double take when I read, "Underwear (briefs) all sizes". I can't really see that as a common donation item for rescue workers.

I did hear on the news, though, that they no longer need socks. So, if you had your heart set on taking some socks...sorry.

Patriotism...

Is having a US flag on your car.
Is donating to the Red Cross or
Firemen's Fund.
Is giving blood by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.
Is attending a candlelight vigil.
Is saying a prayer for those suffering.
Is singing the national anthem or god bless america because it feels right.

It is not attacking (verbally or physically) other Americans because they are from the same area, or they look like, or they have the same religion, or whatever as the people who (may have) done this.

A local DJ responded to a caller this morning by stating (among other things) that [Middle Eastern people's] brethren had made their bed's, and now they'll all have to lie in them. I hope he realizes how wrong this statement truly is, and that other people won't listen to his messages of hate.

Weird

The campus is swamped with military personnel in BDU's today. Checking car tags and IDs, making sure no one who's not supposed to be here gets in. All of the gates except for the one main entrance are closed and locked. Some phone lines may still be down because they were routed through the Pentagon.

Yesterday was scary. I sat at home in the morning and was eating breakfast, watching the Today show, when the second plane hit live on TV.

It took a long time to click that the US was being attacked by terrorists. That lots of people were now dead. Even more injured.

I got to school about 5 minutes before it was evacuated. Walked into the middle of chaos. People running around, trying cell phones because all of the university phones were down. We, being a military institution, may be a target.

I've never been evacuated from somewhere before.

And then home to watch it all over and over and over again on the news. Driving around Rockville to find a Red Cross Center open and able to take blood donations. Awed by the 2 hour or more waiting lines.

I had nightmares last night. I'm sure I wasn't the only one.

And today I'm supposed to sit here and plan out the rest of my week. Think about what I want to say at the next grad ed meeting. Plan a grad student meeting. Take pictures of my immuno slides.

Too weird.

If you would like to donate, try here or here. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule an appointment to give blood if you can.

And read the personal stories at Jimformation.

Ahh..Back To The Good Ol' Days

I'm working weekends again. Trying to get ready for the committee meeting. I just spent 4 hours locked in the university basement listening to Dave Matthews and taking pictures of all (and I mean ALL) of my immuno slides.

Actually, it's not so bad working weekends here. I feel like I'm more productive. More like a true, honest to goodness graduate student.

Working long hours and getting paid squat and all that. :)

But it's nice to be one of the only people in the building. Walking amongst the other overworked, underpaid grad students also slaving on the weekends, trying to finish their theses before the funding runs out...

My people.
