Remember I was saying I couldn't pull up phpAds and Phorums. I checked the paths and they're ok in phpAds. I came to look at MySql Admin in abria and got this message after i tried to log in.

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111) in lib.inc.php3 on line 92

Today, I added cgi-bin access for user space. This is pretty simple. After having root add cgi-bin to each user's public_html subdir, write the following container to httpd.conf:

{DirectoryMatch "/home/~[a-z]+/public_html/cgi-bin"}
Options ExecCGI
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl
{/DirectoryMatch}

Note that I used curly brackets instead of regular container brackets just so I can show you the container syntax. Also, note the tricky ~[a-z] all-inclusive. To be on the safe side, I reran chown and chmod changes that I used initially to build user space. Then, as a particular user, I uploaded a few cool cgi scripts. Here are three different scripts from different accounts (sgruber, stevewil and web root)

http://64.188.29.81:8080/cgi-bin/helloworld.pl (web root)
http://64.188.29.81:8080/~sgruber/cgi-bin/variables.cgi (scott's account)
http://64.188.29.81:8080/~stevewil/cgi-bin/perldiver.cgi (steve's account)

Last nite I put together web user space; this little trick leverages Apache's UserDir directive found in httpd.conf. Default is set to public_html. What this means is that when a user's directory has a subdir called public_html, anything posted there will be available (more or less) from the web. The hangup for me were permissions. After researching my books (Kabir's Red Hat Linux 6 Server and Apache Bible) and the web, I came up with the following permission schema for user space:

chown -R .root /home/~/public_html
chmod -R 0755 /home/~

What threw me off was assigning group ownership to root since I was under the impression that the group *nobody* owns apache services; that's correct, but only after apache's initial spawning when, thereafter, child sessions of apache are created with the group *nobody* as owner. I ran a ps -eff | grep httpd and found this to be the case.

Also noteworthy: I use linuxconf to create accounts. Be careful with ~ because it means root. If you accidentally (or idiodically) use ~ alone, all ini files will be written to /root directory. It was no fun trying to sort out that mess.

notes for MySQL issues:

Scott was trying to setup phorums and somehow something choked to produce following error when requesting a database from within MySQL:
"Can't find file: './mysql/user.frm' (errno: 13)"
I went to http://www.google.com with error message and found four results. This one paid off (permissions problem with mysql datafiles):

Monty gave me the correct clue here. It was a permissioning thing after
all... all of the user.* files in /var/lib/mysql/mysql/ were owned by
root -- all other files were owned by mysql and in the root group. I did a
chown mysql user* and everything is o'tay now...

Thanks Monty!!

I wonder why only those files wound up that way? Anyone know the answer?

Subject: Problems with MySQL Linux init.d startup

:
: Hi!
:
: ----------
: I am running TurboLinux 3.0.1 with MySQL 3.22.20a.
:
: This is an updated RPM package install=20
:
: mysqld is in:
: /usr/sbin/mysqld
: mysql is in:
: /usr/bin/mysql
: databases are in:
: /var/lib/mysql/
:
: There is also a directory with some scripts and stuff in:
: /usr/share/mysql/
:
: There is a file /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql which is linked to =
: /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S98mysql which is what is run at boot time. It looks =
: like a pretty standard stop/start a daemon type thing. =20
:
: The problem is that when the init.d scripts are being executed, the =
: mysql dies almost immediately after it starts.
: The /var/lib/mysql/vader.pacbell.net.err (hostname.err) file looks like =
: this:
:
: mysqld started on Sat Mar 20 11:53:06 PST 1999
: 990320 11:53:08 /usr/sbin/mysqld: Can't find file: './mysql/user.frm' =
: (errno: 13)
: mysqld ended on Sat Mar 20 11:53:09 PST 1999
:
: Funny thing is, (not knowing where it assumes the current dir is =
: exactly) /var/lib/mysql/mysql/usr.frm exists=20
:
: Funnier still is that when I log in as root and run the same script: =
: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start, it starts up just fine with the usual 3 =
: processes and everything appears normal... Can anyone tell me what is =
: going on here? How do I stop it from dying at startup?
:
: -------
:
: shell> perror 13
: Permission denied
:
: The problem is that /var/lib/mysql/mysql/user.frm
: is probably only accessable by root
:
: Check the init.d/mysql script; It's tries to start mysql as a
: specific user. Check that this user has the right to access the above
: file!
:
: (I don't understand why it doesn't work from init)
:
: Regards,
: Monty
:

This is SW, again:
I did the following for the fix from root:

# cd /var/lib/mysql
# chown -R mysql.root *

This changes permissions as MySQL likes it. Somehow permissions got changed when scott made change.

Online Training's Bold Upstart /IW April 01, 2000
KnowledgeNet Live, as the company's product is called, brings together two instructors, whose voices are delivered over the phone, to teach a "classroom" (there were 30 students in my half-hour class on Windows 2000). Instructors can send out screen shots to students and demonstrate procedures step by step. There's a seating chart in the upper left of one's monitor, and students can change seats and pass notes to fellow students (pranksters beware: Instructors can read all notes). If students want to ask a question without interrupting the instructors, they can write a note to a mentor if one is in attendance.

End Game - CONVERSATION - CIO Magazine April 1, 2000
Weinberger's epiphany in "The Hyperlinked Organization" chapter of The Cluetrain Manifesto is simple: Businesses don't consist of slots on an org chart or entries in a database. Businesses are made up of people. And people define and organize the business by continually discussing, literally and metaphorically, what their company is really all about. The internet's influence is killing traditional business structures and allowing these human hyperlinks to organize businesses.
