Deflecting technology>
As much as I might feel like "a kid in a candystore" when I get my hands on a new rig or the latest upgrade to my favorite software, I actually don't hesitate to revert back to my "bull in a china shop" methods of using this stuff. Which, in my case, is not necessarily a bad thing. A tool like softimage in the hands of an animator creates polymorphic talking heads. I'm more interested in taking, say, inverse kinetics and enveloping, which are used in 3D modelling to create things like elbow joints and skin, and turn them into spatial hyper-organisms whose walls are links to other rooms, materials and colors are redefinable tags and whose spatial organization(s) unfold like a falling stack of cards.
Artists' tools>
Softimage is finally pushing their vision of the future of 3D out the door. At webreference.com, their excellent continuing series on 3D outlines how animators and artists must adapt to the new modalities made possible with these tools in The New 3D Artist. Both visions of the future of 3D count on interactivity between object, scene and user as their focus. You can read about the new softimage XSI, how movement and animation will become mixable, composited attributes of objects. The softimage scene viewer is already available for download. It will permit remote viewing, sharing and interaction of complex 3D datasets and animations over the net without softimage on the client system.

Gore and Bush spend a lot of time trying to redefine and capture the fledging political center according to their own twisted visions of what it should look like. At National Philistine, the political visionaries from art's center, your reactions to political ideology is anticipated with unexpected imagary. They're not hedging their bets.
Not about computer-sex, Probe My Ports is kind of a sexy article on computers.
Another in the continuing series of one for the Apathy> This time thanks to Salon Technology | Greyscale paradise, it's ASCII art cross-bred with arcade video games, 70's cool and good beats. All this and not much more at Hi, Res!.
Along the same ASCII lines, though this time kind of a one liner, and it's actually pretty funny. I was dissapointed when Greyscale Paradise came to an abrupt end. BTW, I lost.

Turning away from the accepted products of culture> Art Brut.
Making art is dirty work, but somebody's gotta do it. It's even tougher when you've been shoved to the edges of society because you're mentally ill, perverse or just plain fucked-up. Art Brut or Outside Art is made by those people. From Rousseau to Gauguin and Dubuffet, the artist began searching beyond the influences and means of production that were taught or apprenticed. The search progressed from the far edges of the planet to the outer bounds of their culture.

The good news is that the Oxford English Dictionary is now online. The bad news is, you gotta pay a lot of money.

Art "hitting the streets" doesn't necessarily produce public art, whereby, net.art produces something approaching (at least polemically) networks, computers and browsers. If we are destroying the cult of the artist by giving anyone with ambition, half an ear and Acid Music the chance to be on top of the pops, will artists (even without their cult) still be capable of producing sound, song or scandal?
20000313

What's the difference between, say, broadcasting space, mixing sound or programming a browser, and creating content? Are they necessarily interchangable? Does creation always qualify as content? What is the content of art?
