Working on a defcon 9 review with pics. In the mean time, take note that the head honchos at Adobe are bullying a defcon speaker who pointed out security flaws in their software. This disgusting violation of information freedom must be stopped. Boycott Adobe. Oh, and just to really piss them off, take a look at the presentation that got Dmitry arrested.

This weekend offers the tour of SF, some beach time, and general wackiness at the house. In the meantime, I'm considering a move from tech to writing. Pay would be a bitch, but it's what I've always wanted to do. Also making plans for DC9 with some fellow partners in crime. Got my room at the Alexis Park and (despite past experience) am looking forward to heading to Vegas again.

Something went wrong with the local utility company and it started turning our lights off and on. This had never happened before and it was unsettling, like finding your mom passed out on Percodan. The company, Pacific Gas & Electric, had been eager to be deregulated in order to finally play free-market capitalism the way it's supposed to be played. But shortly into the game, the many small companies it had always screwed before tore its flesh like weasels and took its money ...more

Cut the loaf of bread lengthwise and spread the paste on the bread. Grate the blocks of cheese onto the open loaf. Add the rest of the chopped green onions and the cayenne pepper. She'd gone back to Curacao to work for PWC then to Barcelona for an MBA and is now in Amsterdam working in finance. Believe me, if you've ever wondered what a brilliant, multi-lingual (english, german, spanish, and others languages I can't remember), gorgeous woman was like, you'd be looking for Samjah. Now I've just got to check airfare to the Netherlands!

About 10 years ago, I had a grumpy old english teacher in Virginia Beach by the name of Glenda Bates. She was one of those real hard ass types, one that would send students scrambling to transfer out of her junior year honors english classes. My pleas to my parents to help me transfer (it was a nasty process in the overcrowded school I was at) fell upon deaf ears and I reluctantly spent 12 weeks reading Thoreau, per Ms. Bates' schedule. It was nightmarish, I never wanted to know so much about growing beans. I could barely stay awake. When we finished with Thoreau, I thought for sure that the rest of the year would be just as bad. I was in for a pleasant surprise.

Glenda Bates had us reading loads of late 19th/early 20th century American Literature, an era that still remains one of my favorites to this day. It was thru her I became acquainted with the works of Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, and Willa Cather. The second half of the year, reading Eliot's "The Wasteland" and "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" opened up all kinds of wacky mental corridors to the world of literature for me. No longer was reading just an enjoyable activity, it became mathematical and complex...like piecing together a puzzle as I stuggled to learn and remember all kinds of allusions, plowed thru Fraziers The Golden Bough and cross referenced lots of other early 20th century writers. It was an amazing time, one that I can look back on and actually remember the mental lightbulbs switching on. Glenda Bates never much liked me, in fact I don't really think she liked anything much other than her Camel cigarettes and her dogs, but I honestly liked her and had many conversations with her about her college days at William and Mary, her teaching scholarship, and the declining availibility of a quality college education. I was just a "B" student in her class, but the door she helped open for me gave me an academic passion for literature that complimented the personal one my parents instilled in me.

In my own belated celebration of Banned Books Week, I'd like to name some works that changed my life.

Anything by TS Eliot except his plays.
Above The River...James Wright (the first writer since Eliot to stir me so much, he's now my "favorite" poet. I was introduced to him by on of my Emory profs, Boyd White, who later abandoned college teaching for fly fishing and teaching high school in Tennessee. The same year I first read Wright, I *had* to make the trek to his hometown of Martin's Ferry, OH. Wright wrote of buildings and streets and areas of the town with such detail they were easy to find. Someday, in my copious free time, I'll actually post the pictures I took on my site.)
"Romance"...W.J. Turner (Simple and moving, I found this in one of my father's books of poetry when I was about 8 or 9.)
A Separate Peace...John Knowles
My Antonia...Willa Cather
The Glory and the Dream...William Manchester (This is one of my parents' favorite books, I can easily see why. It's wonderful.)
The Awakening...Kate Chopin
Brave New World...Aldous Huxley
Hamlet...The Bard
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man...James Joyce
Where the Sidewalk Ends...Shel Silverstein
The Great Gastby...F. Scott Fitzgerald
"Christabel" and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"...STC
Dracula...Bram Stoker
Their Eyes Were Watching God...Zora Neale Hurston
The Prophet...Kahlil Gibran
Summer of My German Soldier...Bette Greene

"I'm a gamer. It's what I am. It's what I do." Thus is the mantra of one ubercool chick, Elonka. A recent conversation with Veronica about firewalls reminded me of those "spin toys" we all had when we were kids...I had one with farm animals on it. When you turned the big arrow pointer to the animal of your choice and pulled the string, it would whack out and say things like: "The frog says mooooooo" or "The duck goes hee haw hee haw." I guess that explains a lot about my life.

So, still in Vegas and enjoying some Cabernet a la room service. The brothers have gone out to sample some evening entertainment of casinos and such and I'm in the hotel smokin' cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo...no wait, that's a song. I'm smokin' cigarettes and planning what to do this evening. Casino life isn't much for me and the crowds at these hotels are rather suffocating. Lots of families, lots of people easily distracted by shiny objects and lights. Can't say that Vegas is really a city for me, other than its crazy hours. Looking forward to returning to Atlanta for some sanity. On the Defcon front, however, things are good. Met some fun, socially wacked out folks and got some good info from the seminars. I've partied a little too much, last nite I could barely stay up past midnight...but it's all in a good fun and it's not everyday that GrrlBot travels amongst her geeky peers. More later...time to finish up the wine and get ready for the evening....

Just finishing up some work to get ready for Def Con. Got a day of laundry and packing ahead of me...last thing I want to worry about is web work. The MGM Grand finally has pictures of the crazy suite I'm staying in up on the site.

More on the Roger Black thing. I went to his presentations, which were supposed to be on multimedia dev for web stuff. They were empty...content was mediocre at best and his technical knowledge was not only flawed, but blatantly outdated and incorrect. He's a man who has had success in print media, and thinks that by throwing out a few web buzzwords, he can make the jump to the online arena. Turns out he's written a book (actually, it was written by someone else) called "Web Sites that Work." After checking out the reviews of it, I see I'm not alone in my issues with him. My fave quote about the book: "If you're looking for a retrospective of Black's career, and lots of pictures of his big pumpkin head, you'll love it." Hehe. Sounds like his presentations yesterday too.

Ok, just got in from the conference. That sucked...I was in the multimedia track and must say that Roger Black's presentations were not only factually incorrect, but empty and boring. Ugh. What an attention hog that man is. More to come later.

BellSouth's online ordering page for DSL seems to be down. I would express surpise, but it would be feigned. To try to express the dreadful, horrid, treatment I got in the past 8 months over their DSL (non)service would take days. Hell, these morons can't get their website to work, much less provide decent high speed access. But, if you're real nice, you can get a do-it-yourself-install. I'd wager money it's because a zoo full of trained monkeys could do a better job (and probably have better reading skills) than these idiots. Oh, and if you want another service provider for your DSL (like one that gives you static IPs and a 99% guaranteed uptime such as Zyan), you're SOL, buddy. BellSouth will just refuse to open a line for you. But hey, they'll bill you for the service anyhow. A**holes.
