....men may die, but the fabrics of our free institutions remain unshaken. – President Chester A. Arthur

To Remember

The response to this attack shouldn't be seen as getting even or going to war with the group that did this (most likely bin Laden). Rather, it should be seen as a wake-up call to the world: terrorism and the states that support it are not to be tolerated anymore. The world is too small, people are too interdependent, and the ability of an individual or small group to do harm is so great that terrorism in all its forms cannot continue. — John Robb

The worst-case scenario of crossing the road, after all, is that you'll be hit by a truck and killed. Yet we all do cross roads every day, and could hardly function if we did not. To live by the worst-case scenario is to grant the terrorists their victory without a shot having been fired. — Salman Rushdie

There will be pressure to suspend our freedoms, to allow the government to invade our privacy and control our speech as part of the glossy new war. If terrorists force America to give up its freedoms, then they will have won. — John Carroll

:::  We didn't know if David Letterman could do his show last night, and as we found out he hadn't been too sure either. He did, however, come through in spades.

:::  There are two kinds of patriots: The "God Bless America" kind and the "This Land Is Your Land" kind. I'm the latter. — King Kaufman

:::  We do these things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. — President John F. Kennedy
Take this to heart. This is America. Not the revenge that Bush is promising the people of this country. The idea that the strength and leadership of America comes not from its raw might but from its wisdom to apply that might to support our best ideals — freedom, prosperity, human rights. The courage to choose the difficult paths because they are the right ones. To be a leader by example, not by force. To inspire, not to bully. And that means not just bringing the WTC & Pentagon attackers to justice, but making sure that we do right to the world — all the world — in the process.

:::  In the most sickening turn of events, opportunistic spammers are emailing fraudulent requests for aid.

:::  75ark is pulling the cover art for The Coup's latest album, put together over three months ago, but eerily sent to printing on the day of the attack. In trying to unwind last night, I turned to Wired magazine, and caught the photo in their album reviews section. When I tried to check if a statement had been made, 75ark's networks were being overloaded by phone calls and emails, according to Wired News.

:::  Many have called this attack on America an act of cowardice. So was it?

:::  Red Cross Donations can be made here. Please give blood. O-, the universal donor, is the most needed. O+ and other negative types are also highly needed. Seeing that expression of determination going over people's faces when they were being told to wait until tomorrow to donate blood or that all volunteer openings were currently full gave me great hope in such a troubling hour. My prayers go to all who have lost friends or loved ones in this tragedy, and to the rescue units and firemen still working into the night to rescue survivors. You have New York City, America, and the world community behind you.

Browser News

:::  Weirdness... Internet Explorer for Windows 6.0 was released on Tuesday, and it doesn't support transparent PNGs? That's what it would seem, if you visited Teradome with it and looked at the logo. Odd for a double-validating page that looks great in other standards-supporting browsers like Opera and Netscape 6/Mozilla. Perhaps A List Apart has already figured this one out.  » more

Excelsior!

:::  No matter how much Kevin Smith could change his image now, fueled with the clout of an indie filmmaker, it's amazing and refreshing to see him remain the rampant fanboy he really is. And apparently, it's endearing to the ladies, too. Or lady, in this case, as he tells the story of his and his wife's first kiss in comic book format.
