I couldn't agree more with you about the karaoke series, Lila. In fact, as I was listening to the show you told me about on transom.org (was it called Street Dogs?), I had the idea that we should go back and pick out the best karaoke interviewees and create a new show that hones in on what we were trying to accomplish in the first place with that series, a goal that was gradually and painfully washed out by the actual experiences. Street Dogs was so successful in portraying real individual personalities whose common experience gave unity to the program.

Lila here: Yup, it was Street Dogs. You can listen to it on transom.org.

I spent a lot of time in the car this weekend, driving up to South Carolina with my family. And, since I was the only one who’d brought any cd’s along, I got to play deejay the whole trip, a role whose novelty and excitement usually wears out near the end of the second hour. There’s so much pressure involved in deejaying for my family – there are very few songs at least one of us doesn’t hate. Mom can’t stand anything with too much twang or even the most innocent of swear-words, Dad’s definition of music excludes anything recorded after 1975, and I’ve spent so many years trying to convince my little sister that she’s going to love this! that I’m reluctant to force her yet again to smile sweetly and say yeah, Lila, this is pretty good, even though we both know she’s just being nice. Eventually, and with a little hesitation, I settled on a disc of highlights from This American Life. I don’t think my family enjoyed it quite as much as I did, but I did catch them chuckling at least once or twice.

I bring this up because I took a lot of mental notes about making radio programs while I listened. Here are some of the things I want to remember for next time:

1. It’s okay, probably even a good idea, to use more than one song for a story. Changing the music changes the mood, and sets up a better frame for the narrative. I especially liked the music in Sarah Vowell’s piece about going shooting with her dad.

2. The music fades are a lot quicker on TAL than in what I’ve been doing. It makes the voice stand out more than the music, which is kind of the point.

3. I’ve really gotta turn these things into stories. I think a good first project would be to make a story out of the karaoke series. Start out with our general nervousness about recording in the first place, feature some of the funnier and more poignant interviews, detail the trials and tribulations of learning how to use our equipment and make a radio documentary. If I really work at the writing, I think it could be alright.

I'm so proud! A few weeks ago I sent a mixtape to a gal named Cat, who just started a mixtape exchange program through frykitty.com, her website. And damn if our tape isn't listed at the very top of the page! She calls it "Tangy Barbeque Sauce." And then: ' Lila has put together a mix with edgy twang informed by blues sensibilities, all with a heart of rock and roll.' How cool is Lila? Sub-zero! Dry ice!

Kidding.

Anyway, I plan on putting the Greenshoes mix (frykitty's own offering) up on the mixtape page real soon. But I worry a little 'cause it's very similar to the first mixtape. Maybe I'll put the BBQ one up first?

Wait a minute. I think I was wrong when, in my last post, I suggested that the Frank & Fritzy Show is a fake. Now that I've listened to a second episode, I'm all but convinced that it's bona-fide documentary. Wow.

Good news: I'm almost finished editing the interview we did with Herbie Galloway. As soon as I can get my hands on a halfway-decent microphone, I'll record the introduction and upload the piece. I like this one.

Today I found a superb internet radio show called "The Frank and Fritzy Show" on WMOB. (Isn't that a great set of call letters?) It's based on a set of alleged FBI wiretaps of mobsters' telephones - each episode features a "taped" conversation between a couple of mob guys. Yes, the tapes reveal the secrets of organized crime, but they also document the often humorous day-to-day of two guys who coulda' been Sopranos. * There's a new episode every Wednesday at www.wmob.com.

I admit it. I haven't updated the website in over a month - but I'm moving! Isn't that a great excuse? How about let's call it summer vacation! The good news is that we're working on it - Lara and I have done two fabulous interviews in as many weeks, and have just devised a plan to get them onto the internet. Lara's gonna produce Michele and HKR5; I'm gonna do Herbie and the revised Japancakes, as well as a couple of new mixtapes. We hope to have a whole new crop of programs by the end of July, but I wouldn't count on that just yet.

Atlanta traffic can make you either very creative or very violent, depending on your disposition. Yesterday, as I sped along at the breakneck pace of 3 - 4mph, I got creative. I hate to think of how much time I lose to driving, so I often look for opportunities to get something else done while I'm in the car. I can drink coffee, fill out a deposit slip, thumb through the new J. Crew catalog, all while scanning for errant pedestrians and keeping an eye on the bumper of the car in front of me. (ASIDE: What I'd really love to do is take the subway. Short of that, the radio oughtta be good enough to keep me occupied, or at least good enough to make me feel like listening to it hasn't been an enormous waste of my time. But it's not, which is why we need RADIOROCKSTARS.) Anyway, since I was on my way to the Star Bar to interview Herbie, I had all my recording equipment on the seat beside me, which prompted me to think, now's as good a time as any to do a sound check. So I popped in a new minidisc, plugged in the microphone, and started rambling. And that's when it hit me - we oughtta be doing an *audio* weblog! I'll think on it.

Moving Right Along. The Deputy & I recorded what I think will be a superlatively good interview with Herbie last night. We're getting better at remembering just to smile instead of laughing obnoxiously and out loud.

In other news, it looks like we might oneday update the mixtape page with a little help from a nice gal named frykitty. She's started an interesting mixtape exchange project on her own website and has agreed to contribute a tape called "greenshoes" to ours. Very kind.
