Updated the links: Top Five is now there, as is Alison's site-- I like reading hers. It's fun. I think that is one of the criteria if you want to be hosted by Stickbus. Took others down, both of which sucked anyway. No activity, and the people are lame anyway. [If you think I'm being bitchy, you've never met the people about whom I am speaking. If you want to know why I have this opinion, I'll be happy to tell you]

Something about spending time with family sucks the creative energy out of you. That epic blog I was planning to write... it's not happening in as much magnitude as I had hoped it would.

Last night was strange because I haven't been around for awhile, but it feels like I never left. My room and other areas of the house are completely different, but it still feels as though I stepped through a time machine and Madison feels like a memory that I didn't know I had, kind of like a very vivid, long dream. It also feels as though this time machine has taken me back a whole year, only I can see the future as though it was the past. Once again, I fear that I am not making any sense, so here's an example: I come home, the living room is a different color, and three Brasso Continuo posters are hanging on the wall above the piano (which also reminds me that they are also on the wall in my house in Madison, too). Of course I remember the recital and the people and everything, but it also feels so much like home, before I left, that the connection between the people and things that the posters represent and my being home makes it sort of odd. Another example: I found a stuffed dog in my room that I forgot I had, and it looks exactly like a miniture Chloe (who is Alex's stuffed puppy). I am reminding myself to bring it back to show him, and at the same time remembering when I got it, and suddenly, the past, future and present collide and I am experiencing one of those existential moments.

I tend to be a little bit more crazy than other people in this way, I think. I find meaning in almost everything, and language cannot even begin to descibe to you my feelings during or about certain situations. I suppose none of this is particularly meaningful to you, even though it might be very much so to me. However, this also represents the differences in our perceptions and the strange way life manages to be two very different things at the same time (just like nothing and everything changes all at once).

I finally did fall asleep after my mind reeled for a bit. I played alright in church. I am not pleased, but I am also a perfectionist. I got lots of compliments though, so people seemed to think otherwise.

My father took my sister and I out shopping under the pretense that I would be getting a new mini disc player, but it turns out Target was out of stock. While he wouldn't pay any cent over that price for the mini disc player, Kate cleaned up with about $150 worth of merchandise. I guess this is another example of the older sibling/younger sibling thing, where it's tough luck if I don't get what I need, but she still manages to sucker lots of money out of my dad. She also whines alot more though, so I suppose that how it is. You don't get what you want if you're not annoying about it.

So that brings us to present, and I want to go home, which right now definitely means Madison. I might give one of my buddies a call, just because it will most likely keep me sane.

I can't sleep, but I have a massive post to write. However, I must sleep now as I have to play in church tomorrow. It's been a crazy night. It's really strange how nothing and everything is the same as I left it. The association loops that are already present in my brain have been increased by so much tonight that it is impossible for me to settle down and get some rest. Its as though there is a filing cabinet in my brain, and I am pulling some out and the snapshots that are my memories of the events of the past and present are interchangeable with the future and the progression from my life before and my life now has changed me infinitely and not at all at the same time. It's like "Slaughter House Five" (even the word "five" is a cue for those loops of association!)-- "Davis Anderson has come unstuck in time." Does this make sense? Hopefully it will after I type everything out tomorrow.

Well, it seems that the kids I talked to tonight were down for the Top Five Blog thing, so it might not be as lame as I thought.

Tonight was fun. Ben came over and I took him and Grant to Humanities to make them listen to Mozart, but I was less than stellar. Ah well, it's what you get for not warming up. I probably won't play at all tomorrow either, so I might not be very good at church. We then collected Bethany and went to Ben's new place, which looks like a fun place to live, and I had the idea that me and my friends should rent a house senior year. I am not sure whether that will pan out, but we shall see. That would be awesome, but we'd have no place to visit. After touring the house, we went for an unexpected hike and sat on rocks on the breakwater. I used to be so fearless about scrambling over rocks and such things, but now I am very cautious-- I wonder what happened to me? It's kind of a sign of my increasing age-- realizing that I am not invinsible. After we climbed of the rocks, we went to get some ice cream, and then rented a movie, during which I fell asleep. I must go to bed now, because Alex wants to go out to breakfast and I also need to pack, do dishes and also hopefully play my horn some tomorrow, and work a nine hour day. Ah, I hope this all works out!

Okay, I've launched a new blog, entitled Top Five Blog. Hopefully it will catch on and lots of people will want to post Top Fives too. If you would like to partake, e-mail me and I'll hook you up.

Lauren's most recent blog (Aug 17) gives me an idea-- a group "Top Five" blog where we and hopefully some friends can post our top fives. What do you say, Lauren? I'll be in touch.

Ah yes... this site is beginning to look better. Now, if I could only find a name...

I talked to Steve yesterday. It was very nice and I hope he decides that he has time to see me during the brief amount of time that I will be home next week.

Well... I just bought a recording of the Brahms Trio with Myron Bloom (who teaches at Indiana) on horn. Let me just say that I am very glad that Indiana was never an option for me, although I shouldn't base that off of this one recording. My review of it is that there is a time and place for that brassy horn sound, and Brahms is neither. In the thirteenth measure of the second movement, the horn and violin interupt the triplet pattern that the piano has (and will be reiterated by the horn and violin together at a later point), is marked forte. I am not sure whether or not there is a schwarzando there, but by the way Bloom is playing it, it sounds as though there should be. It sounds really obnoxious for this piece. Save it for Mahler. I am going on Amazon to find a different recording of this piece. Bethany has one with Peter Damm (who is German so is name is pronounced "Dahm"). European players dig the vibrato, so I am not sure of that particular recording, but I at least agree with the musical decisions (i.e. tempo and fluxuations, etc). David Jolley's recording is pretty good as well, but he takes the first movement realllly slow. We'll see what I can come up with. Before I buy, though, I am going to email Doug and see if he has suggestions.

I don't think a single male/female friendship in my entire life has worked out as it is supposed to ("suposed to" being a relative term defining my conception of what should take place in a typical monogamous friendship, although maybe mine are completely normal according to the rest of society). When I think about it, there has been weirdness in almost every single monogamous relationship I have ever had, assuming that I felt close to this person. I think I have had casual male friends, where you hang out with other mutual friends, but usually don't call each other or hang out alone. And in situations like those, I also recall the presence of one of those male friends with whom I did have some kind of something hidden behind a normal friendship. Maybe that quote from "When Harry Met Sally" is correct: Men and women never can be "just friends"... there is always unexpressed desire to sleep with one another.

okay, i don't know what's wrong with me, but i don't like that name either... i think i need my name in the title. i shall think and have something new soon.

Davis has 5 letters, fourth letter in both five and Davis is v, and V is the roman numeral for five. There are five stars in my tattoo, and stars, which are my favorite geometric shapes, have 5 points. All chords contain the root and fifth, V-i (in a minor key) is my favorite cadence (p.a.c., for you theory geeks), and my initials are cadential (DEA= IV-V-I, assuming a major key). D is letter #4, added to A #1 equals 5, and E is the fifth letter of the alphabet. The numbers in my birthday (10/15) are multiples of 5. One of Ben's many songs has somehow become my song and one of the lyrics in it is "Is there any special meaning in the number 5?"

Thus, "The Number Five and The Meaning of Life (as told by Davis Anderson)"

Still no name for the site...

suggestions so far include:
"Sex, Lies and Euphemisms" (Jerry)
"Davis Online: A Tasty Holiday Cheese Blog" (Ben)
"Another Blog on the Fire" (Lauren)
"Warning: Dangerous Blog" (me referencing a conversation about a sign that read "warning: dangerous bog")
"How to Do Just About Anything" (Lauren again, referencing a book of the same title)
"How to Be Davis, the Daily Commentary" (me)

Again, sorry for lack of posts.

I accomplished quite a bit yesterday. I finished writing my cadenza for Mozart's third horn concerto, although I don't know if they'll let me play it at church. Yes, that's right, I am returning to my home town in order to give a sold out performance at the church I used to attend. According to my mom, Mrs. Schroll, the music director and my first horn teacher, said I should play because "people have forgotten" that I play the horn, let alone that I am a music major. I'm not sure what exactly that has to do with anything. Why do I care if people don't know that I play horn? It's not as though they're paying tuition and have very much interest in what I'm doing, especially since I don't, and never did, for the record, tithe. But oh well. One of Doug's most famous pieces of advice is to perform whenever you get the chance. So I will.

I went to a party last night. It was alright for a little while, but then it kind of started to suck, so I got out of there. I am awake at a very early hour for the summer (I actually awoke at the ungodly hour of 6 am) and I think last night's alcohol consumption is to blame for this. I am feeling mildly hung over, but ready for my day. This is also the first time I've been drunk on a Monday. Early in the summer I was trying to decide which days of the week that I'd not been drunk, and the verdict was that Monday and maybe Tuesday were the only days left. Friday and Saturday were kind of obvious, I took care of Sunday immediatly following our return from the horn convention the night before Heidi went home, Wednesday and Thursday were both in Spain, and I don't remember Thursday but its almost the weekend so I'm pretty sure it's happened. So I can cross Monday off my list, not that this was a goal or anything.

Despite my feeling a bit ill, I will accomplish many things today, including going to dinner with Grant to celebrate his birthday. He's 21, which is insane. He is in the same year as me, and I am still 19. I've only got two months and 1 day though, which also means that my recital is exactly two months from today. Which means that I must go play my horn...

sunday, august 12

Sory for the lack of posts. I've been working, playing in the musical and such, so it's been a little busy. I had a "situation" regarding the loss (or stealing) of my wallet on Friday, so that wasn't a particularly good day, and anger is not such a healthy thing to post. Went to a party last night, had a good time. I think that brings us to speed.

Happy Birthday to Chris McGann, Grant and Dave.
