I think I will check my sources more carefully now. Carl Cannon of the American Journalism Review recently wrote a cautionary tale of journalism in the age of the Internet. (from the comprehensive media watch site, www.cursor.org)
Also from cursor: Daljit Dhaliwal -- media superstar? Her ITN World News is a nice change from the local media.

Are you looking for the Space Shuttle and/or the International Space Station? Garet was kind enough to point me to NASA's link. (link is for Seattle, but you can plug in different lat/long and other locations).

I received this forwarded email from our department, in response to the recent series by the Seattle Times about clinical trials at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. How weak is this? Why don't you leave it up to me to be an informed reader of the Times and stop clogging up my inbox with this stuff. I'm intelligent. You don't have to tell me what to think. From: Hartwell, Lee [email address deleted]

Subject: e:mail #2 regarding Seattle Times article
Dear Staff and Faculty:
Thank you for the many emails we have received summarizing your dismay, concerns, and questions about the Seattle Times articles. We appreciate your support enormously, as well as the many phone calls and emails of encouragement we have already received from the community. Although we have been aware for some time that the Seattle Times was working on an investigative article about the Hutchinson Center, the allegations made are more detailed and negative than we originally anticipated. We are in the process of ensuring we have accurate information so we can respond definitively to the most egregious allegations. We understand the importance of providing accurate information to our staff, patients, volunteers, donors, and the public at large. We will hold employee forums on Tuesday, March 13 at 2 p.m. in the Metropolitan II Building in 927 A,B,C conference room, and at 4 p.m. in Pelton Auditorium in the Weintraub building (with video access in the conference rooms and the cafeteria) so you can hear the facts and ask questions you might have as a result of the articles. I will also hold a forum on Wednesday at 8 a.m. in the 3rd floor conference room (G3100) in the Alliance building for staff who work there. Several of you have asked what we plan to do to let people know the Hutchinson's perspectives on these issues. We are planning a closed press conference on Thursday at 2 p.m. to address our views on the issues. We will also run full page ads over several days, beginning on Thursday, in the local newspapers, informing people in general about the key topics outlined in the articles and our perspectives on the cases that are profiled. The events mentioned in the articles on Sunday and Monday occurred many years ago, so I do not have first-hand knowledge of what went on. In order to assert to you and all of the other individuals who care about the Hutchinson Center that the actions of the Center, its faculty and staff, and its review committees met high ethical standards and served the interests of our patients, I am reviewing many documents and interviewing many of the individuals involved. The more I review the record, the more my pride in being a part of this great institution is validated. I pledge to you that I will do everything possible to ensure that our staff, patients, donors, volunteers and community supporters continue to share this sense of pride and ownership in being a part of one of the world's great research institutions. I look forward to seeing you at one of the forums.
Sincerely yours,
Lee Hartwell

Today's diddle: a kind of "crossover post": A daily scene at our dinner table. Kina always manages to get her little nose up on the edge of the table... no matter if she ate dinner herself, she just wants to know what we're eating.

Got pointed to Seattle Stories from Yahoo! 's picks of the week. And to think that I live in this very city, oblivious to the many stories and electrons whizzing by.
