Most people forget to be tourists in their home towns. It took me two years before I got around to seeing the bats in Austin (for those that don't know, there's a bat colony that lives under a downtown bridge and they come out at dusk - there's a LOT of them). I can name a number of touristy things I have yet to do even in Vancouver. If you think your city's getting boring, try doing the things your friends do when they visit =)

Highly recommended activity for y'all: Go be a tourist in your own home region. For some of you this recommended activity requires being a tourist in your home region AGAIN. But it really is worth it -- I'm back on the Stanford campus, where I previously spent four years as an undergraduate, and now I'm wandering around on it like a tourist (again). It's interesting the see what changed about the places and what changed about the way I understand these places. Try it yourself and see.

I ended up deciding on not buying a desktop at all because I'm always out of town. Instead, I'm ordering a Wacom Intuos 6x8 tablet that I can carry with me and plug it into my laptop. Unfortunately, they're backordered EVERYWHERE.

I've decided maybe I should get something from Alienware. I could build a really REALLY badass system for the price of the SlimTop. I also think that I should probably not invest anything while I'm travelling so much. But Alienware has some sweeeeet systems.

On another note, Towlie from South Park is cool.

I'm currently looking at the Sony VAIO Slimtop™ LX900 Pen Tablet Computer. Thus far, I've gone to CompUSA and looked at it but didn't get to try the pen because somebody stole it. Argh. I'm thinking of getting this for (a) drawing and editing and (b) gaming. Those would be my two primary functions on this computer. So here are my opinions so far from what I've read:

CONS:
- max resolution of 1024
- one rep told me there were only FOUR levels of pressure sensitivity in the pen (but then said the screen has far more - tens of thousands. Which made me think the rep didn't know WTF he's talking about)
- there's only one PCI slot for expansion and no AGP slot
- the reviews of the built in 3D card are shitty. i.e., bad for games
- one review said the monitor was hard to position ... I'll have to research on this

PROS:
- the new version comes with CDRW and DVD, 60Gb HD which are things I'd have spent additional dough on
- 1GHz Pentium III is sufficient for me
- upgradeable RAM starting at 128
- the on screen pen tablet damnit! I can draw ON THE SCREEN. Wacom has an LCD/tablet combo that costs as much as this entire system (altho I'm sure it's a far better tablet)
- for ~$2500, I'm getting a system I nearly speced exactly on Alienware for ~$3000 but with an LCD monitor and on screen tablet

DON'T KNOWS:
- are there still good 3D cards for PCI slots? is the existing card using an AGP slot that I can steal?
- when I'm done with this desktop, can I just plug this monitor into a new desktop?
- what IS the level of pressure sensitivity this tablet has? Nobody has the info! I just have to try it out ...
