LAX flights from my base have been cancelled until November. Oh, man, work is going to suck. But (there is always a "but" or two), this shall pass and the sun shall continue to rise. I refuse to allow the consequences of others' actions to dictate a new and unwanted pattern for my life. Not being annoyed by the aftermath is probably one's best revenge.

My LAX flights have been cancelled for the rest of the month. You do know what this means, don't you? It means that I will not be able to see LA Guy anytime soon. And, I need -- really need -- an LA Guy fix. Those eyes, that smile, the intellectual stimulation ... After the events of the last week, I deserve an LA Guy fix.

Just when you thought that you couldn't be any more pissed off, the American fundamentalist religious right comes along and launches their own kind of jihad. I wish they'd stick to condemning Teletubbies.

3:30 in the morning seems like a good time to wash a load of laundry, if you ask me (which you didn't; but, I volunteered my opinion anyhow.) Woke up a little while ago, unable to breathe through my nose and coughing. As if the events of the last few days were not dreary enough, I now find that I am coming down with a cold. Joy.

Yes, I should have read all of my email before posting. I had no intention whatsoever of posting any more than necessary, yet I now find that I must post a few items which are sure to piss off the masses. Some people have asked, so here are the answers:

Q. Are you afraid to fly?
A. No. I'm more afraid of some drunken body-builder having a 'roid rage at 31,000 feet than I am of terrorism in the sky. And, I still contend that my drive to the airport is the most dangerous part of my job.

Q. Should people be afraid to fly?
A. No more than they were before September 11. If you find that you are afraid, please do not fly. Take your chances with Amtrak or Greyhound, instead.

Q. Will the new airport security measures work?
A. Not to keep you any more safe than you were before. But, to annoy the hell out of you? Yes, for that they will work exceedingly well.

General Carrie Commentary:

  • I am not nearly as upset by the acts of terrorism as I am by the fact that US intelligence didn't see this coming.
  • If you don't believe that the US made Usama bin Laden, you are an ignorant fuck.
  • If you weren't patriotic before all of this happened, why bother to concern yourself with owning an American flag now? (Can you say hypocrite?)
  • In my opinion, we should have made the entire Middle East -- and, I do mean ENTIRE -- a parking lot over a decade ago. We didn't do it then and we wont do it now. Mark my words.

Now, go ahead and tell me that this is no time for sarcasm. I am not trying to be sarcastic. I am simply calling it as I see it, and I see it as very fucked up. It always was fucked up.

So, now that I have aired my gripe with airport security measures, please allow me to apologize for not posting before today. I just walked into my home about an hour ago, having been holed up in a hotel in Chicago since Tuesday. I didn't bring the laptop and it wouldn't have done much good if I had, as phone connections were lousy (not to mention extremely expensive) in Chicago. My crew found out about the crashes at the Trade Centers as we were loading up passengers in Chicago enroute to Los Angeles. We pushed back from the gate, held for 10 minutes, and were then recalled to the gate. We were fortunate, we cleared the airport before they closed and were able to take our bags with us to the hotel. Later flights sat on the ground for hours before being assigned gates, and crew and passengers on those flights were not allowed to remove their luggage from airport property. No need to go into further details, let it suffice to say that things went crazy. Also, please allow me to thank those of you who were concerned for my well-being. Huge virtual hugs to each and every one of you. Special thanks to Edge and "LA Guy", who kept everyone informed by posting updates in the comments area.

Prescription meds not carried in their original bottles? Confiscated. Tweezers? Confiscated. Nail clippers? Plastic eating utensils? Pager batteries? All confiscated. All except the one thing that probably should have been taken. Yes, folks, airport security has been "beefed" up. Unfortunately, it still blows.

Had lunch with Dave and, yes, it is awful to be him. The cafeteria girl was so enthralled that she damn near dumped a scoop of macaroni salad on me instead of on the plate.

Dave: "If I look so much like this guy, how come no one ever mentioned it before?"
Me: "You wouldn't teach catechism, remember? The kids would have told you."
Dave: "But, I had teenagers at mass ..."
Me: "Lots of them. Ever wonder why?"
Dave: "Nah, someone would have said something."
Me: "And, you've let your hair grow out, hon."

He crams half of a pastrami sandwich into his mouth and chews for a while, mulling things over.

Dave: "Do you find this Lance Base person attractive?"
Me: "Bass. And, no, not really. He's a little young for me."
Dave: "What if he were older?"
Me: "Dave, eat the other half of your sandwich; your students are gawking at us."

Was that slick on my part or what?

I'm doing it again. I am daydreaming in Technicolor, with digital clarity, about how God-awful or terribly wonderful tomorrow's trip may be. On one hand, there's the prospect of flying with a particular pilot with whom I no longer speak. I don't dislike him, I only distrust him. Several months back, he lied to me about something after I told him that I did not want to know the truth of an issue. From that point onward, I defended him against rumor only to discover that the rumor was, indeed, true. He lied to me and my belief in him made me look like an idiot. "Poor, deluded D'Intino, he really pulled one over on her." Yes, he did. I trusted him and he compromised that faith with one lie. I haven't spoken with him since and I am not about to resume on the morrow. I'd rather cut my own spleen out with a rusty spoon than speak with him again. Yes, that is how much I hold a grudge. That is how much I despise being lied to, especially by someone whom I thought I could trust.

Now, on the other hand, tomorrow is a layover in California and could I be so fortunate as to see Him again? It's been how long, a week, 10 days? Too long. I want to see that smile, those eyes; hear that voice; and learn everything about him. This time, I want to touch his hand, just to ascertain that he really does exist in the flesh. I want to get another good sniff of him in order to further imprint him upon my mind. I want, I want, I want, but one can't always get what she wants, now can she? ( What if I substituted need for want; would that enhance my prospect? Doubtful.) Tomorrow could be wonderful if I were to see Him again.

See, I'm doing it again. I'm thinking far too much about everything.

Dave: "I'll make you a deal. You teach my classes and I'll work your flight this week."
Me: "I don't think you'd look quite as cute in the dress."
Dave: "Doesn't matter. You can teach and I can learn to pass out pretzels."
Me: "Is that all that you think I do?"
Dave: "No, but it has to be better than my classes."
Me: "You want to be trapped at 31,000 feet in a pressurized metal cylinder with a bunch of teens who think you're Lance Bass?"
Dave: "You just had to go there, didn't you?"
Me: "You deserved it for the pretzel remark."

Everybody's doing it. Now, The Boss speaks:

    Are you male or female?
    Look out mama, your little girl she has changed;
She cut her baby curls and she's got her act rearranged ...

    Describe your neighborhood:
Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores,
seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more.

    How do you look?
    Is that me, baby,
    or just a brilliant disguise?

If you could say something to the person you like, what would it be?
    For one kiss, darling, I swear everything I would give;
Cause you're a walking, talking reason to live.

Where do you wish you were right now?
I want to sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover's bed,
with a wide open country in my eyes,
and these romantic dreams in my head.

What would you say to your best friend?
I ain't lookin' for praise or pity,
I ain't comin' 'round searchin' for a crutch,
I just want someone to talk to ...

    Describe yourself:
    I don't give a damn
For the same old played out scenes,
    I don't give a damn
    For just the in betweens.
Honey, I want the heart, I want the soul,
    I want control right now

What do you usually do on Friday nights?
I think I'm going down to the well tonight
and I'm going to drink till I get my fill ...

How do you feel right now?
It's like someone took a knife, baby,
edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley
through the middle of my soul.

    Any closing words?
Everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back.

I guess I really am a "Jersey Girl"
