the Soviet veterans of the Afghan war in the 80s have a pretty good reason not to go to war in Afghanistan.

"In 1979 the USSR intervened in Afghanistan to prop up a pro-Soviet government facing tribal revolt. What was meant to be a swift operation turned into a brutal nine-year war that left 14,000 Soviet soldiers dead."
"Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, who withdrew his troops in 1989, has cited the costs and strains of the Afghan war as one of the key causes of the USSR's subsequent collapse. "
"The mujahedeen (warrior of god) moved their arms and fighters through over 4,000 mountain passes, and those are only the ones we eventually got to know about. It's impossible to control that terrain," he said.

mayhaps if the yanks send their troops in to Afghanistan, they'll lose most of them, pour most of their budget into it, and subsequently begin the fall of the American Empire?

at least they'll end up in the history books as a footnote of one of the greatest superpowers laid low by stupidity and egoism.

"In fact, violence is rarely effective. If violence was effective, we would have had a peaceful planet eons ago."

"In the past 20 years, we have bombed Libya, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Haiti, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, and Yugoslavia. There are two things about those countries -- all are poor countries, and the majority are
people of dark colored skin."

Colman McCarthy makes a compelling reasson not to do what everyone else's doing in terms of solving the world's problems...

my opinion on the attacks:

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind."
-Mahatama Gandhi

an attack on american soil was a long time in coming, given their foreign policies against other nations, but declaring war is giving the people who did this excactly what they want.

also, just yesterday I remembered an old friend of mine from college (who was the maid of honour at our friend's wedding in Las Vegas) worked in the financial district in Manhattan. I contacted some people (I didn't have her email or anything) and quickly found out she was only 3 blocks away from the towers at the time, and is ok.

but, in not so lucky news, my ex girlfriend, Christine, had said 3 of her old neighbours from when she was living in Connecticut, were on the plane that crashed in the Pentagon (now the Horseshoe).

also, the FBI has been using this opportunity to bully ISPs into installing Carnivore and have been quite successful so far...

Welcome to the New World Order.

when i heard the news about M$ not being broken up, my first thought was:

"who the fuck did they buy off?"

then they go on to say, "the government said that it "will not seek a breakup of the company into separate operating systems and applications businesses... Instead, the department will seek an order that is modeled after the interim conduct-related provisions of the final judgment previously ordered in the case."

meaning they want to slap restrictions on the company, which will probably have as much effect as the FDA checks on slaughterhouse contaminations (scroll down halfway to "Where the beef has been")

in other words: welcome to america, where the consumer is always fucked.

damn, this is SO cool... i'm running 98lite on my box now, basically win98 without IE integrated in the OS, which was bogging everything down and crashing on a frequent basis...

now, when i startup, everything just pops up a lot faster, and i don't have to worry about whether it's gonna freeze and crash if i open another app, which is sweet beyond words...

gonna have to bone up on coffee the next few days, since i'll be geting up a LOT earlier, having to work at 7am, due to the boys in the house starting school tomorrow...

in other words: bedtime.

there's nothing like waking up after a night sleeping with all the windows open, and smelling that first hint of autumn in the morning air... not to mention the chill when you hurriedly pull your longjohns and sweater on after casting aside the covers.

people who live where it's warmer all year round don't know what they're missing out on.

*sniffff* *sigh*
