You know, I think that we all tend to take this Internet thing for granted. I know I certainly have. I just finished watching this show on the History Channel documenting the birth and growth of the Internet into what it is today.
It's truly amazing to realize that less than a decade ago, nobody in the mainstream had heard of the Internet, let alone the World Wide Web, which didn't even exist then.
What was even more amazing was to see the people who actually developed the backbone of the Internet talk about how and what they did. It's a reminder of just how young the Net is and how it has quickly become so pervasive in our everyday lives.
If you stop and think about it, however, it shouldn't be such a surprise at how popular the Internet has become. For an individual to co-exist and function in a society, there must be communication. If you look at the primary killer apps of the Net that have brought it to critical mass (email, Mosaic, instant messaging), you'll see that they're all about communicating with each other.
As farfetched as it may sound, by using the Internet we are on the cutting edge of technology. Sure, you could just be IM'ing a friend or posting your thoughts on a cheesy web page. But realize that your participation, along with millions of others, is the driving force of one of the greatest inventions of modern times. With the innovation and ingenuity of the human mind, who knows where we'll be in another ten years.
I know I can't wait to find out.

So the United States of America, supposed leader of the free world, gets booted off of the U.N. Human Rights Commission, a human rights body that the U.S. helped found in 1948.
I'd make some retarded joke about how we ARE the weakest link, but I won't. Because this is just really quite sad and pathetic.

Well, hey it's about damn time that Bill Gates and Linus Torvalds have come to their senses. How about they both settle and agree that neither O/S is all that super, eh?
Seriously though, neither iterations of Microsoft's latest two O/S's, WinMe and Win2k, are all that inspiring. To date, I've had the (dis)pleasure of using all of their operating systems since Windows 3.1, and Win98SE is easily my favorite. It's what I have running on all of my computers save one. At work, I have both 2000 and NT, and NT is ten times more stable than Win2k. I can have my NT machine running for weeks without a reboot, whereas the 2000 machine freezes and dies on me every now and then.
I certainly hope the next version of Windows, XP, will be a better effort than Microsoft's most recent crap jobs. But considering all the talk about incompatibilities with legacy hardware, it sounds like it's gonna be a nightmare.

Yeesh. I haven't updated in a while, huh? As the street-wise would say, "My bad!"
Life has become a bit topsy-turvy these days. I don't think there's anything in particular; it's just a combination of all the little things that add up.
In the past week, I've received my computer case from J&R and my home theater speakers from Cambridge. Right now, my DVD player is somewhere in New Jersey, and my receiver is on its way from Missouri. How do I know this?
Thanks to online tracking from UPS! It has got to be one of the coolest things in the world. Dude, this how the Internet should be used.

I guess, with the Cold War over and whatnot, you find what you can to keep the ol' rivalries alive. It's kind of sad to see the once vaunted Russian space juggernaut sell out like this.
I remember as a kid how I wanted to be an astronaut (along with a baseball player, rock star, and president), the esteem and prestige I associated with an individual who earned the right to go into space. Now apparently it can just be bought. What's up for sale next?

I flipped to NBC last night at 10pm, expecting to see Law & Order, when I was instead greeted by the latest Survivor-meets-Millionaire knock-off, the The Weakest Link.
I knew it had debuted earlier in the week (I mean, you've gotta be living in Siberia not to know about this show; NBC was promoting it so heavily), but I don't watch any of those reality or game shows because I find them painfully tedious and contrived. However, seeing as how there wasn't really anything else to watch, I thought I might as well give it a shot.
As Ern points out so perceptively, it's like watching a car accident. You can't turn away. It's almost like Jerry Springer meets Greed meets the 3rd grade. Sure, that host is bloody annoying with that irritating way she says "You ARE the weakest link. Goodbye." But damn, you gotta love watching those contestants squirm as they're ripped into by her on national television. That's reality TV at its finest.
The best part is when a contestant is voted off, and they talk about their feelings and who they think should be voted off next. Talk about your vindictive shit! One lady who got booted last night (the one at the end, taught karate, looked like Janet Reno) gave this one guy who voted against her the ultimate evil eye, and in the post-vote interview, referred to him as "that vindictive little man." I was dying!
In other news, I just slammed my hand into a chair when I was taking off my jacket this morning (yes, America, I am a moron), and I've got these two huge welts of blood on two of my fingers. You know, when it's bleeding under the skin and it just puffs up? Nasty. But somehow it's kinda cool too.
Okay, maybe not cool, but fascinating. I've always been somehow entranced at the sight my own blood. Uhm, that didn't sound right, did it? Does this mean I'm gonna grow up to be a serial killer?
