You here by yourself? I thought it was Jeffrey playing a little joke on me, but it soon became apparent that it was some drunken guy out looking for someone to take home. When I turned around to see who just bumped my ass with their crotch, I was greeted by the dazed smile of a mean-looking, bemustached guy in his late 50s wearing leather gear.

"Hey sweetie. What are you up to tonight? Wanna go do something?"

Oh shit.

"Sorry. I got a boyfriend waiting outside." Composure, you've got to keep your composure. Let them look. Don't show that you're scared shitless.

"Oh, forget about him. You'll do much better right here." He grabs his bursting crotch.

I smiled and said no more. It's always best to disengage the conversation and offer no more encouragement.

Come on, counter boy, where's my Hawaiian?

Remind me not to go to pizza parlours by myself at night again.

This is PNN. I've noticed over the last couple of days how predictable the headlines have become over at CNN.com. I understand the urgency and importance of what's been going on in the U.S., which is guaranteed to remain their frontpage material for many days to come. But surely, they can come up with story angles better than the one they've been using and beating to death, which has more to do with George W. Bush's reaction to the attacks and what he's planning to do with Afghanistan.

Consider this afternoon's headline: "Bush: I want justice," which is accompanied by a photo of the President looking angered and ready to bite.

I bet tomorrow's will be: "Bush: I'm really, really pissed off," and then another photo-op mug of him clutching his fist.

Eh. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering that CNN is owned by Republicans.

It's a monumental image thing. I got into an e-mail discussion with several people here at work regarding the pros and cons of having our commercial software products available to our clients for instant download at the time of purchase on our online store. Already there is a strong consensus that we should altogether remove the instant download option because the product packages in question have grown too big for what is considered reasonable download time. We're talking 30-35 MB setup applications here, which, isn't all that bad. I mean, come on, I've downloaded 70 MB packages off the web and everything was kosher. True, I did it through a LAN connection, but I would have waited half an hour (or however long it takes) to download it through a 56K modem. It's still a heck of a lot faster than having the product sent to me by snail mail or even courier. You get to use your software right away. Serious people appreciate this sort of convenience.

Additionally, giving customers the option to download their software purchases sends the signal that as a company we're hip, we're happening, we're getting with the program. In the age of the Internet, having an online software store that doesn't (even partially) allow product downloads seems pointless.  It's an image thing.

I told them all of this, but I'm outnumbered. And no one listens to a bleached-blonde Journalism major for insights on Internet technology trends.

The Cheesy Top Twenty. Jennifer Lopez proves she's really, er, "Real" as she successfully thwarts Mariah to retain the No. 1 position for a third week in a row. "I'm Real" is J.Lo's fourth Cheesy No. 1 (and her third longest-running cheesetopper). Will she make it a full month? We'll see. Elsewhere on the countdown, Afroman puts on the pot-powered moves again and crash-lands into the Top Ten with "Because I Got High," while Mariah Carey matches the J.Lo record of having three songs charting on the countdown simultaneously. Ms. Carey checks in at No. 18 with "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)." Details.

Sunday Blast From The Past. When I was in grade school (fifth grade I believe), my mom entered me into a schoolwide popularity contest for boys and girls that involved selling raffle tickets to raise money for the school (they wanted to build more classrooms). Fortunately, since I was just a kid, I didn't have to go out and sell a single ticket. My folks did all the hard work.

The boy and the girl who sold the most number of tickets (and therefore raised the largest amounts of money) were respectively crowned Prince and Princess. Those who came in second, third, fourth and fifth places got "lesser" titles. I only managed to place third, which earned me the "Prince of Hope" title. The boy who got crowned as Prince Supreme was this kid named Lancelot, who was for the longest time the object of my boyhood affection. He was quite handsome. I wonder if he's still prince material these days.

Anyway, we had this pompous coronation ceremony at our school grounds and a parade the following day. We got to ride festively-decorated floats around our neighbourhood. The picture below was taken just before the parade started. I don't remember why I was smiling like I had just won a million dollars. Probably because I caught a glimpse of my Prince Lancelot. They should have called me the Prince of Boyhood Lust or something. I was a bad Prince of Hope. I totally neglected my princess, whose name I believe was Clarice (well, hello... Clarice). She was a sweet and nice girl. I think the only time I ever spoke to her was when I told her that her gown was pretty.

The prince who would be queen.

You haven't got mail! Someone wrote me recently to deplore my inability to respond to his/her e-mails. I thought I'd officially come clean in public about this issue and at the same time do a little public service announcement, so here goes...

There are many different (possible) reasons why an e-mail sent to me goes unanswered for a very long time or never gets answered at all. Here's a quick rundown:

Sometimes, things go wrong in cyberspace. A server may have conked out and lost your message while en route to me. The virus gate at work may have malfunctioned and deleted your message by mistake. The bottom line is, the internet is not 100% reliable when it comes to e-mail delivery.

I don't do flames. I can pretty much tolerate disputatious messages from people. As long as there is provocative intelligence displayed, I will always respond in one way or another. But if you start calling me names and using racial slurs, you're instantly put on the blocked senders list and it's over. Life is too short to spend sparring with difficult and close-minded people.

If you're not in it for seriousness, I'm outta here. In this fast-paced world, time is of the essence, and I make it a point (before responding to a message) to do a quick once-over and decide whether it's worth my time to sit down and respond. If I see that it's coming from blowmybig@dong.com, I won't even bother.

Down and out laziness. Nobody's immune from slacking. I do get afflicted with it from time to time, usually when I'm too tired, stressed out about things or physically ill. But I always make it a point to respond. It may take me a while, but an answer will be forthcoming. I believe it's only fair and respectful to write back to people (excepting flamers) who took the time to write you. You simply have no excuse to be impolite to people, especially if they say nice things about you and your site.

It's too much, it's too much! Since email is so easily posted and read, the sheer volume of it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Factor in being human and you will inevitably have things falling by the wayside. So, if you've sent me something a while back and I haven't responded to it, a little reminder would be much appreciated. That is, of course, if you're not too busy being upset with me and sticking pins in a voodoo doll bearing my likeness. ;-)

I hope that clears everything up.

I'm glad I'm not alone. Somebody else thinks there's something Republican-fishy about the attacks on Tuesday.
22:57 :: [darn tootin'!]

Let's face it, Madonna is a genius. My review of Madonna's Drowned World Tour (Live From Detroit) is finally up. (Click on the picture to launch.)

Shhhhh...

11:40 :: [darn tootin'!]

Wag the Bush. I get this nagging feeling that the terrorist attacks on Tuesday were deliberately and fiendishly carried out by a covert American organization (or something) that has ties with the Republican Party. They know that their boy in the White House isn't doing too good. Approval ratings are slipping fast. The economy is in bad shape (and the grand tax cut scheme isn't exactly helping).

So what do you do? What do you do to give your boy the perfect opportunity to go out there and be a hero? Destroy a couple of national monuments and kill thousands of people. Plant all sorts of evidence that points to Osama Bin Laden and further brainwash the American people into believing that this person actually exists and that he must be eliminated. Organize a retaliation plan. Nuke a place (most likely somewhere in Afghanistan) to Kingdom Come and then declare that Osama is dead. I can almost see the newspaper headlines.

"George W. Bush leads U.S. to victory"

"George W. Bush kills Osama Bin Laden"

"George W. Bush is a brave hero"

"Re-elect George W. Bush in 2004"

They did it in 1991 with the Gulf War, which didn't quite work out to then-President George Bush's advantage. Maybe this time, they'll do it right.

Of course, this is all speculation, the work of my active (watched-way-too-many-X-Files-episodes) mind. I'm not saying that it is true, and even if it was, I don't think anyone will be able to prove it. The repercussions of such an action would be tremendously dire. That's why we will always be told what they want us to hear, and shown what they want us to see. The big picture will remain hidden from view, and the gears of a machine that's bigger than anything we can ever imagine will continue to turn behind the press conferences and change the world as it sees fit.

Can I have my Xanax now?
