The Footnotes at JoeLavin.com

(Almost, but not quite a weblog)

"It's not that we're uncertain, we're just not certain."
In honor of fired Boston Red Sox manager Jimy Williams, Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe has compiled this list of Jimywocky. Jimy may be a good manager, but he's a weird man.

Correction: In last week's column about China, it was incorrectly stated that the Chinese word fangpi means "bullshit." Although it can be used in a similar manner, a more accurate translation would be: "Pass gas!" or "Go fart!" No bulls are involved. We here at Joe Lavin's Humor Column apologize for the error.

Finally, an entry here. My last column about the Beijing Olympics was based on a slightly more serious piece I did for the Boston Herald. Here's a link to the Herald column. It's not all that different, but someone did ask that I post it.

And for a limited time only: some pictures of my trip to China.

Apparently, I'm not the only one against supermarket value cards, the subject of today's column. I just found an online organization opposed to the cards entitled CASPIAN (Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering). Check out their web site at www.nocards.org. Incidentally, unlike me, they don't recommend using a fake name.

While on the subject of baseball, here's one reason why the Red Sox might just win it this year. With the help of a Tibetan holy man, their curse may have been reversed.

Here's some background on my latest column about sports fans. James C. McKinley Jr. of the New York Times wrote an excellent article about this last summer. If you're interested in the subject, it's well worth reading.

I also wrote a serious piece about baseball and computers last month in San Diego's Computoredge. The article is available here.
