Human nature being what it is, it is nevertheless very sad that it takes something like this to bring out the compassionate and gentle side of people. It is truly wonderful to see people suddenly being courteous, wanting to help each other, joining together in love.

The big danger is not war nor the curtailment of freedom as we know it (both very likely), but that we will forget. Already I see people, and even sometimes myself, going on as if nothing has happened. But when I find myself wanting to joke or go back to life as usual, I feel like a clown performing at a funeral. Tens of thousands of people were just murdered. How can we ever go back to life as usual?

There's a certain surrealism, of the kind that seems to be commonplace in the 21st century, to hearing “Heavy Things” over the P.A. while at K-Mart shopping for an extension cord.
We've had standing water in our basement now for over a month, due to a leaky foundation, so over the course of the past week I've rented a wet vac a couple of times and have been working on it. I got another 18 gallons or so out last night. Only about 70 or so to go. Mosquitoes are also breeding in it, so we have a mosquito problem as well. Satan has tried everything he could to keep us there. Over the course of the past year and a half I've dealt with a bat flying around my bedroom, 4 mice, a female cat and kittens slipping through what used to be a window and into my basement, last week a possum did the same thing (so after convincing it to leave I covered the hole a little better until a permanent solution is enacted), not to mention countless wasps, birds living in our gutters, earwigs, flies, and, before all that, roaches. Let me out!
The XML server is down this morning, so I've been surfing almost since I got here. Commentary on the Jupiter Media Matrix findings (regarding web surfing habits) over at little green weblog:
“The web is starting to remind me of a neighborhood that used to be nice, but has been overrun by fortune tellers, porn stores, and gangs.”
NICE.
