17.09.2001 Today in my team meeting for some research that I am working on, conversation moved to very obvious placement of proactive and prosocial statements in television shows. As I didn't want us to get very off-track, I kept my mouth shut, but what I wanted to do was stand up and yell, "BOY MEETS WORLD." Yesterday when I was watching that show, there were two main topics: needing to go on a diet and having a pregnancy scare. During the pregnancy scare portion of the show, the characters parents said, "Even though this is scary, we can get through this. It's a wonderful thing to have a baby. FAMILIES SHOULD SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER IN TIMES LIKE THESE." or something very much to that effect. Later, when addressing the characters on a diet, one of the characters says, "IT'S A SHAME THAT THE MEDIA PRESENTS THESE UNATTAINABLE IMAGES OF FEMALE BEAUTY AND CAUSES BEAUTIFUL YOUNG WOMEN TO SPEND VALUABLE TIME WORRYING ABOUT THEIR BODIES."
While I appreciate the sentiment, it seemed very forced. |
