Bikini-clad Virgin Mary draws fire

Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of my favourite Marys. "Dunnington argued that the Virgin was invoked as a revolutionary icon for Mexican independence in 1810. That invocation was expanded later to include all ethnic and racial groups and genders."

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Chapel

Quote from this page: "Warning: The photo page for this person contains images which may not be suitable for those who are easily disturbed."

St. Catherine Labouré and the Miraculous Medal

"The ball which you see represents the world, especially France, and each person in particular. These rays symbolize the graces I shed upon those who ask for them. The jewels which give no rays symbolize the graces that are not given because they are not asked for."

One year ago today: The Brooklyn Museum of Art opened its much-hyped ``Sensation'' exhibit which had drawn controversy because of New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's move to cut off city funding to the museum. (Giuliani objected to some of the artwork, which included a portrait of the Virgin Mary decorated with elephant dung.)

Naples Saint's Blood Liquefies, Citizens Relieved
NAPLES, Italy

(Note: Not, actually, a Mary sighting, but creeperific regardless.)

The substance believed by many Neapolitans to be the dried blood of their city's patron, Saint Gennaro, liquefied right on schedule Tuesday.

Clergymen held aloft the powdery substance in its glass vial as thousands of the faithful gathered in the southern city's cathedral, and after about an hour of prayers they displayed the vial again, its contents liquefied.

The substance usually turns to liquid twice a year -- on September 19, the saint's feast day, and on the first Saturday in May.

Some Neapolitans, traditionally very superstitious, fear disaster may strike the city if the blood of the fourth-century martyr does not turn to liquid.

Disaster has struck at least five times after the blood failed to liquefy, including in November 1980 when some 3,000 people died in a massive earthquake that struck southern Italy.

Scientists have confirmed that the substance inside the closed vial is blood but cannot explain why it regularly turns to liquid.

Religious Sightings in Egypt Town
Assuit, Egypt

Thousands of people were traveling to this southern Egyptian city in recent weeks after reports of an apparition of the Virgin Mary and a flock of exceptionally large, white pigeons in a shining light.

The local Coptic Christian synod released a statement Sunday reporting some sighting of "spiritual features'' since the first one Aug. 17 over the dome of Saint Mark's church. The statement did not say whether religious leaders had confirmed any sightings personally.

"I haven't seen any light,'' Father Baki Sedka, head of a neighboring church, said Monday. "I stayed up all night and I didn't see anything except a few pigeons.

"The appearance of a few pigeons doesn't justify a miracle,'' Sedka said.
