Now I'm in New York, and more specifically Manhattan (everywhere else my cousin tells me is a dive and thus no need to leave the island - they say it gives true Manhattaner's nose bleeds - hahahaha).

It took me ages to put my finger on why I am in love with this city - but this is as best I can articulate...

Everywhere I go, I've had my discman playing in my ears - just for something to walk to.

Manhattan is different.

It's the first place where the only thing I want to hear is chaos that is New York. The hustle of pedestrians, the aggravations of cab drivers, the subway under your feet - THEY all are my music. All of it helps to remind you that this city is alive and all of it IS the New York experience.

As I write this I'm sitting in a cafe in Times Square. In front of me is a guy who kinda looks like Fabio, playing the guitar. Pretty ordinary stuff...bar the fact that he's only wearing a cowboy hat, cowboy boots and a pair of undies that's got "naked cowboy" written on the back. He's charging $1 for people to take a photo of with him. I got a photo but I didn't pay. I'm using Nicola's "I work for the KJB" camera and lens. It is classified as a weapon.

drove down to mexico on the weekend. we found a place that sold corona's for 60 cents and 3 taco's for 1 dollar.

needless to say we didn't move from that place till home time.

and it wasn't even the cheapest deal in town. legend has it that locals go to local places and buy corona's for 25 cents. but alas, for all intensive purposes, i was a 'tourist', 'white boy' for the day, and thus pay the loaded price.

we didn't complain.

driving in l.a. is so easy, the people here are so friendly. red lights are mere precautionary alerts, blinkers/indicators are a thing of the past and everyone lets you in their lane without any notice at all. i asked my friend rowan...

"why is this so rowan?"

rowan: "because people are too scared your gonna pull out a gun and shot them if they have a problem with your alleged questionable driving."

shibu: "if only we all could be this civilised."

i just tried to take a short cut across a busy street by running through a cactus infested medium strip. in the process of jumping and darting in and out of traffic so as not to prick my delicate body, i landed with my foot at right angles with my leg.

i can't really comment on final fantasy's plot, i was just too engrossed with it's animation and realism. the film is unbelievable and if i were a b-grade hollywood actor i'd be concerned. why pay john travolta 40 million to do a movie (and have $38.00 to spread over the rest of the 200 strong cast) when you can create john travolca (the animated version) at a fraction of the cost!

and there's no tantrums, no salary disputes, no one gets killed when shooting blanks (damn Crow directors!) and no ones takes any notice if the lead actor is uncomfortable doing a nude scene.

whether your a sci-fi fan or not it's worth going just to see what real geeks can do. i went by myself for an uninterrupted viewing and was pleasantly surprised when i saw 80% of cinema were on their own too.

rob: camper mission accomplished.

the boys at hyro are probably cussing me even as i write this entry complaining that i don't update my site regularly enough with travel tales! maybe it's the heat, maybe it's my aunties pursuits to marry me off, maybe its' the jetlag, maybe it's the excuse of jetlag so i can sleep in and not have to be a 'tourist'...i really don't know.

whatever it is, i can say that i'm well, i'm not married, i am the camera happy tourist and i need to stop thinking everything here is half price and a bargain when the australian currency conversion is at 50cents and thus not a bargain at all!

i don't think i could ever live here in auckland (or anywhere else in new zealand for that matter) - i just wouldn't be able to pronounce any of the street or suburb names.

yesterday i hopped on a bus and asked the bus driver "where he was going" and "can i get to unitec 3". all reasonable enough questions i would have thought, especially when my destination - unitec 3 was only a few km's down the same road. apparently not. i stood there for what seemed like a 10mins trying to get a response out of this driver. it was like he was in this momentary coma. there was now one else on the bus so it felt very jacob's ladder-ish to me.

off to big bad america on thursday.

at 11:25am today (eastern standard time), i resigned from my position at hyro.

and though it may not be a dramatic as i'd like to think it was...

isn't it amazing how insecure leadership is threatened by competent subordinates! i just love having my opinion and input shat on by uneducated simple people.

there's a saying in this industry that goes like this..."know 5% more that the next person and your an expert".

i have a new theory..."know 85% less than a wooden stool , and you become boss."

good one lumberg!

Figuring out how to get Minidisc tracks onto audio tapes when my system only plays CD's and Minidisc's - trust me, it was harder than I thought.
